Rachel Martin Of Oceano Wines + Oceano Zero On How to Begin, Navigate, & Sustain Sobriety

An Interview With Wanda Malhotra

Communicate with the people in your life. Know yourself, stay strong in your resolve to a sober lifestyle, and set boundaries in a clear way with your friends and family.

In a world where the journey towards sobriety is often challenging and deeply personal, understanding the pathways and strategies for achieving and maintaining sobriety is crucial. This series aims to provide insight, encouragement, and practical advice for those who are on the road to recovery, as well as for their loved ones and support networks. As a part of this series, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Rachel Martin, Founder + CEO of Oceano Wines + Oceano Zero.

Rachel Martin, winemaker and non-alcoholic wine pioneer, brings over two decades of winemaking experience to the creation of Oceano Zero dealcoholized wine. After earning her degree at the University of Bordeaux’s School of Enology, she applied her expertise to expand her family’s Boxwood Estate in Virginia, elevating it to international recognition and securing Middleburg’s designation as the state’s seventh AVA. Rachel continues her work by bringing together a community focused on wellness, intentional living, and inclusivity.

Thank you so much for joining us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’?

I grew up in a single-parent home of modest means, and I learned the value of hard work and determination from an early age. As the youngest and only girl of my generation, trying to keep up with my older brother and cousins was tough, but it instilled in me a sense of perseverance and the drive to prove myself.

During my teenage years, I was rebellious — I attended five high schools in just four years. This is when my relationship with alcohol began. There were times, especially during the tougher moments, when I woke up with fragmented memories or experienced the disorienting haze of blackouts.

This period of my life taught me valuable lessons about adaptability and resilience. I had to navigate different environments and challenges. Although I faced adversity, these experiences helped prepare me for the unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship.

In my family, alcohol was a normalized companion — ever present at celebrations, fine meals, and fun occasions. My career as a wine professional over the last 20 years only deepened this association, making alcohol a constant presence in my daily routine.

Then, in January 2023, I participated in a dry month. Pairing this challenge with Oceano Zero last year was a revelation for me. The impact on both my mental and physical health was striking, and it brought a newfound mental clarity. Reducing my alcohol intake was the catalyst to many healthy and positive changes in my life.

This pivotal experience became the cornerstone of my dedication to Oceano Zero — a wake-up call that urged me to rethink our connection with alcohol and its deep influence on our lives and health.

While I haven’t adopted complete sobriety, I now enjoy a more balanced approach to drinking. I’ve integrated a mix of traditional and non-alcoholic beverages into my routine, consciously restricting alcohol consumption primarily to weekends. Sometimes, I even go weeks without a drink. This moderation has allowed me to cultivate a healthier lifestyle while still cherishing the cultural and social dimensions of drinking in a more controlled and mindful manner.

Embracing this balanced perspective has not only shaped my personal growth but has also become an integral part of the ethos I advocate through Oceano Zero.

Can you share with us the most interesting story from your career? Can you tell us what lessons or ‘takeaways’ you learned from that?

The milestone in my career that I am most proud of was authoring the petition that led to establishing Middleburg Virginia as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). It was a game-changer for the region, putting it firmly on the wine map and showcasing its exceptional wines to the world. Tackling that position seemed daunting. But here’s the thing — breaking it down into manageable chunks and giving myself some breathing room made all the difference. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you take it step by step. I’ve faced my fair share of “nos” along the way, but I’ve learned that every “no” is just a stepping stone to that big, resounding “YES!” This experience taught me the power of self-confidence and resilience. It reaffirmed that with perseverance and grit, I can turn ideas into reality, even when the odds seem stacked against me.

You are a successful individual. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Reflecting on my journey in the wine industry, I’ve come to realize the immense impact of three core qualities:

Passion and Perseverance: My relentless drive is fueled by my love for winemaking, sustainability, and innovation. It’s like having a fire burning inside, pushing me to conquer obstacles and stay true to my mission. My advice to budding enthusiasts? Find that spark within you and let it ignite your path.

Reliance and Grit: When you’re chasing a dream, you’re bound to face doubters and naysayers. But trust me, it’s your inner voice that knows the way. Tune out the noise, tap into your intuition, and embrace resilience like your secret weapon. Every stumble becomes a stepping stone, propelling you closer to your goals.

Let your values guide the way: A commitment to sustainability, mindful drinking, and a healthy lifestyle has not only shaped my business but also defined my personal values. It’s a driving force behind Oceano Zero and Oceano Wines. My advice is to let your values be your guiding star. Embed sustainability and mindfulness into your entrepreneurial journey from the beginning. Not only does it shape your brand, but it also resonates deeply with like-minded consumers who value the same ethos.

Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that might help people?

Currently, I am at the forefront of pioneering terroir-driven non-alcoholic wines, a venture that has never been done before. It serves as a testament to my willingness to push boundaries and challenge the status quo in the wine industry. I am passionate about this industry, so I take every opportunity to educate those with little to no wine experience. I want to help individuals elevate their appreciation of quality as they learn about each step of the grape growing and winemaking process.

The launch of Oceano Zero non-alcoholic wine and the nurturing of a community focused on mindful sobriety and healthy living have been truly fulfilling endeavors. At the heart of it all is our mission to cater to wine enthusiasts who prefer to skip the alcohol without compromising on taste or quality — that’s the essence of Oceano Zero.

When you drink dealcoholized wine, you get to indulge in all the richness and complexity of wine flavors and enjoy the added benefits of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. But the best part is that you also get to skip the drawbacks of alcohol. It’s like hitting the jackpot of wellness while savoring every sip. Our goal was to offer a seamless transition for those looking to cut back on alcohol without sacrificing enjoyment. With Oceano Zero, you can still relish the taste of wine at gatherings, feel included in the festivities, and prioritize your well-being — it’s truly the best of both worlds!

Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of our interview. How would you advise individuals who are contemplating the journey to sobriety but might be hesitant or unsure about taking the first step? Are there key considerations or strategies that can make this initial phase more manageable?

First, having non-alcoholic beverages readily available is key. Keeping your fridge stocked with alternatives ensures you’re prepared for those moments when the craving hits. If you’re not sure where to find non-alcoholic options, you can turn to the internet. Check out boisson.co for a fantastic selection of alcohol-free wines, beers, ciders, and spirits.

It’s also helpful to clear the alcohol from your home — how you decide to do that is a personal choice. Some folks prefer to throw away every last drop, while others stash it away, out of sight, to remove temptation without tossing it altogether.

If you’re not ready to eliminate alcohol completely, here’s a strategy that resonates with many: try limiting your alcohol consumption to a drink or two on weekends only. It’s like dipping your toes into the sobriety pool — a gentle start that allows you to pay closer attention to what your body needs. You’ll soon notice the positive changes, from improved sleep to lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels — all signs that your body is cheering you on!

As you embark on this journey, fill your time with activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, sans alcohol. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or diving into existing passions, embracing a purpose-driven life is key to staying on track. Remember, it’s about prioritizing your well-being and finding fulfillment beyond the bottle.

Sobriety often comes with its unique set of challenges. Can you share insights on how individuals can effectively navigate obstacles or triggers that may arise during their journey? Are there specific tools or support systems that you find particularly helpful in overcoming these challenges?

Planning and making purposeful choices are key. If you’re heading out to eat, call the restaurant beforehand to hear about their non-alcoholic options. And when you’re party-bound, don’t be shy — either ask the host about alcohol-free choices or bring your own selection of non-alcoholic beverages to share.

Having confidence in yourself and your decision is really important. Be upfront about your commitment to staying dry, setting those boundaries straight out of the gate. Not everyone will grasp your decision to embrace sobriety, and that’s okay. The ones who’ve got your back will go above and beyond to cheer you on and keep you cruising along your chosen path. Making it clear why it’s important to you sets the stage for mutual understanding among important people in your life.

Now for the fun part — searching for your new NA favorites. As I mentioned before, visit your local non-alcoholic beverage retail stores, or check out sites online like boisson.co to stock up on alcohol-free beverages. Trust me, there’s a whole world of taste sensations waiting for you, minus the alcohol-induced fog.

Finally, find your community. Surrounding yourself with like-minded souls who champion sobriety can be a game-changer. Look out for non-alcoholic pop-ups, cozy NA bars, and meetups in your area. Bonding with folks on similar paths adds an extra layer of support to your sobriety journey.

Maintaining sobriety is a long-term commitment. From your experience, what are the essential factors that contribute to the sustained success of individuals on this journey? Are there lifestyle adjustments or mindset shifts that prove crucial for the ongoing pursuit of sobriety?

Remember that sobriety is a marathon, not a sprint. In a world where alcohol often steals the spotlight, it’s crucial to keep your “why” close to your heart. What inspired you to kick off this sobriety journey? Share that story with others, and when your determination starts to waver, give yourself a gentle nudge by revisiting those reasons.

Now, let’s talk about goals. This is your chance to dive headfirst into something fresh and exciting. Always dreamed of mastering the art of pottery or learning how to play the piano? Now’s the time to make it happen. With your newfound mental clarity, set those goals in stone, sketch out a plan of attack, and get ready to discover new passions and interests. Focusing on newfound passions is a great way to keep those alcohol cravings at bay, especially in the early stages of your journey.

And who says celebrations have to revolve around alcohol? Find ways to celebrate that still feel special and elevated. Become an expert mixologist and play with flavors in beverages that remind you of the fun cocktails you once enjoyed — this time without the negative impact of alcohol. Find new recipes and pair them with a delicious bottle of dealcoholized wine like Oceano Zero. Embrace the social scene with open arms, relishing life’s luxuries without the fog of alcohol clouding your view.

The great news is that it doesn’t take long to begin enjoying all the benefits of a life without alcohol. Your whole mindset shifts naturally. You’ll find that gatherings are no longer about the alcohol, but more about you being your authentic self. You’ll find greater clarity, improved memory, and the ability to be completely present.

Based on your research or experience, can you please share your “5 Things You Need To Begin, Navigate, & Sustain Sobriety”?

1 . Stock up on non-alcoholic beverages. If you don’t have a local non-alcoholic bottle shop, check out online retailers such as boisson.co. Discover new favorite non-alcoholic beers, wines, and spirits that cater to your taste preferences.

2 . Unleash your inner mixologist. Invest in some mixology books and experiment with creating fun mocktails. Explore flavors and combinations you might not have tried before. Introduce your circle to new beverage choices that taste delicious and support you on your journey.

3 . Communicate with the people in your life. Know yourself, stay strong in your resolve to a sober lifestyle, and set boundaries in a clear way with your friends and family.

4 . Join a community of mindful, sober people. If attending in-person events isn’t feasible, head over to social media. There are so many incredible sober influencers out there, and connecting with them and with their followers can help normalize this new life you have chosen — it helps to feel less alone and more seen and understood.

5 . Make sure to leave yourself reminders that alcohol doesn’t serve you. Keep visual reminders of why you chose sobriety. This could include photos or videos illustrating the negative effects of alcohol on your well-being. Keep a journal with thoughts and memories of times when alcohol has interfered with the quality of your life. You chose this path for a reason — make sure that it’s easy for you to remember and reflect on those reasons.

Community support plays a vital role in the journey to sobriety. How can individuals find and engage with supportive communities or resources that align with their specific needs and goals? Are there online platforms, local groups, or initiatives that you recommend for fostering a sense of connection and understanding during this process?

As I mentioned before, community is so important. If you’re not sure where to start, check out the Oceano Zero Wine Club. This newly formed community offers special content and opportunities to connect with others on a similar journey. Plus, you might just stumble upon your next favorite non-alcoholic wine while you’re at it!

Listen to podcasts and find sober influencers for another layer of support. Tune in for insight, real talk, and practical advice from those who’ve walked the sobriety path before you. You can also strike up a chat with fellow listeners and influencers, swap stories, and build your own community of travelers on the journey to sobriety. Who knows, you might even find a lifelong friend or mentor along the way!

And for my fellow city dwellers, keep your eyes peeled for non-alcoholic pop-ups and bars cropping up in larger metropolitans. These trendy hotspots aren’t just places to sip on delicious alcohol-free concoctions — they’re hubs of camaraderie, where sobriety is celebrated and supported. You can also check out sober events like the Zero Proof Experience — a traveling event that’s all about fostering friendships and offering support on your sobriety journey. If you don’t see any events on the horizon, swing by your local non-alcoholic retail store and chat with the staff. They often have the inside scoop on any upcoming gatherings or happenings in your neck of the woods.
