An Interview With Eden Gold

Stimulate Your Mind with Intellectual Activities: Engaging in intellectually stimulating activities, such as reading books, solving puzzles, or pursuing creative hobbies, nourishes the mind and promotes cognitive vitality. These activities challenge the brain, enhance cognitive function, and contribute to overall mental resilience. I’ve witnessed clients experience renewed mental clarity and a sense of purpose through regular engagement in intellectually stimulating pursuits.

In our modern, fast-paced society, mental wellness is a crucial aspect of leading a fulfilling life. However, for many people, achieving and maintaining good mental health can be a challenging task, with obstacles such as stress, anxiety, depression, and more. That’s why it’s essential to have practical and accessible strategies for mental wellness that can help build resilience, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being. As part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kimberly Parker.

Kimberly Parker is a licensed psychotherapist and Forensic Evaluator who specializes in trauma. Kimberly is also a forensic evaluator, and she volunteers to provide a psychological piece for those escaping inhumane treatment from various countries. Kimberly’s area of expertise is in PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Personality Disorders, Somatic Disorders, and eating disorders. Kimberly assists clients with healing their various parts of self with evidence-based treatment models such as EMDR and Brainspotting Therapy.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about cultural sensitivity, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?

Growing up, my family placed a strong emphasis on education, which gave me a solid foundation. I’ve always had a passion for helping others, whether it was people or animals. As a kid, I remember visiting nursing homes during holidays to sing and give out gifts, and those experiences stuck with me. I knew early on that I wanted to be in a position where I could make a difference in people’s lives, which is why I was drawn to psychology. It seemed like the perfect fit for me to pursue my goal of helping others.”

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

One of the most captivating experiences in my career thus far has been the opportunity to delve into the realm of mental health and wellness through writing articles. Whether exploring topics related to workplace well-being or strategies for fostering healthy child development, the ability to craft narratives that resonate with readers has been immensely gratifying. Writing has always been a passion of mine, and being entrusted with the platform to share insights and ideas in the realm of mental health has been both fulfilling and enriching.

You are a successful individual. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

1. Humility Your humility is evident in your acknowledgment that your achievements are not solely attributed to your efforts but also the guidance and will of a higher power. This humility likely fosters an open-mindedness to learning and growth. For instance, perhaps early in your career, you encountered challenges that required you to seek guidance from mentors or colleagues. Embracing humility allows you to learn from others’ experiences and perspectives, enabling you to navigate obstacles more effectively.

2. Thirst for Knowledge: Your recognition that knowledge is an ongoing pursuit demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional growth. An example of this trait in action could be when you encounter a new trend or development in your field. Instead of resting on your current understanding, you took the initiative to delve deeper, whether through research, attending workshops, or seeking mentorship. This continual quest for knowledge not only enhances your expertise but also keeps you adaptable in an ever-evolving landscape.

3. Compassion: Your compassion for those in need of healing infuses purpose and fulfillment into your work. This trait likely drives you to go above and beyond in supporting others. For instance, imagine a scenario where a client or patient was struggling with mental health challenges. Your compassionate approach, coupled with your expertise, allowed you to provide them with not just treatment but also empathy and understanding, ultimately facilitating their healing journey. Your deep-seated compassion likely fosters meaningful connections with those you serve, enhancing both their outcomes and your sense of purpose.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview about mental wellness mastery. What is one often-overlooked daily habit that can significantly improve one’s mental wellness?

Among the array of daily habits crucial for mental wellness, one that often escapes adequate attention is the cultivation of proper sleep hygiene. Sleep, in my perspective, stands as a paramount undertaking, as it serves as the body’s mechanism for rejuvenation and healing. The research underscores the profound impact of insufficient sleep on both mental and physical health. The American Psychological Association (APA) highlights that sleep deprivation has been linked to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, while the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that inadequate sleep may disrupt the brain’s ability to regulate emotions. Moreover, the National Sleep Foundation warns that lack of sleep can have serious consequences for physical health, including increased risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and compromised immune function. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), insufficient sleep is associated with a higher likelihood of chronic conditions such as hypertension, stroke, and certain cancers. To encapsulate the significance of sleep, Thomas Dekker aptly stated, ‘Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.’ By recognizing and nurturing the importance of sound sleep hygiene, individuals can pave the way for enhanced mental well-being and overall vitality.

How do you recommend individuals recalibrate their mental wellness after experiencing a significant setback or failure?

When faced with a significant setback or failure, recalibrating mental wellness is essential for resilience and growth. One effective approach is to map out a plan of realistic goals and identify actionable steps toward achieving them. This involves setting both short-term and long-term goals, recognizing that the short-term goals serve as building blocks that lead to long-term objectives.

Short-term goals should be achievable and measurable, providing tangible milestones to celebrate along the way. These goals serve to create momentum and foster a sense of progress, which is crucial for maintaining motivation and confidence. Long-term goals, on the other hand, represent the overarching aspirations that individuals aspire to accomplish.

By breaking down long-term goals into manageable steps and focusing on incremental progress, individuals can regain a sense of control and direction after experiencing a setback. Additionally, individuals need to reflect on their values and priorities, ensuring that their goals align with their aspirations and principles.

Ultimately, recalibrating mental wellness after a setback involves fostering a mindset of resilience, adaptability, and self-compassion. By setting realistic goals and taking deliberate actions toward achieving them, individuals can navigate through challenges with greater confidence and emerge stronger from adversity.

In your experience, what is a common misconception about mental health that hinders people from seeking help or improving their wellness?

In my experience, a common misconception about mental health that often hinders people from seeking help or improving their wellness is the belief that medication is the only solution. Some individuals may have reservations about taking medication, which can prevent them from exploring other beneficial treatment options. Additionally, there’s a misconception surrounding therapy, with some perceiving it merely as a platform for conversation and advice-giving.

However, the reality is that mental health treatment encompasses a broad spectrum of approaches beyond medication alone. While medication can be an effective tool for managing certain mental health conditions, it’s essential to recognize that therapy, specifically evidence-based therapeutic practices, plays a significant role in promoting mental wellness. Therapy involves utilizing techniques and interventions backed by empirical evidence to address underlying issues, develop coping strategies, and foster personal growth.

By dispelling these misconceptions and recognizing the diverse range of treatment options available, individuals can feel empowered to seek the support they need to enhance their mental well-being.

Can you share a transformative moment or client story that highlights the power of a specific mental wellness strategy?

One transformative moment that stands out in my practice involves guiding a client through a mental wellness strategy known as mind mapping. The client initially presented with a multitude of negative thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and high levels of stress. Through the process of mind mapping, we systematically charted out their negative thoughts, feelings, and stressors, gaining insights into their underlying sources and patterns. Delving deeper, we explored the connections to past experiences, recognizing how past events had shaped their current mental landscape.

As we progressed, we shifted focus towards mapping out the client’s desired emotional state, thought patterns, and strategies for achieving their goals. This phase of the process allowed the client to envision a future characterized by resilience, positivity, and personal fulfillment. By visualizing their desired outcomes and identifying concrete steps to attain them, the client experienced a profound sense of empowerment and agency over their mental well-being.

Over subsequent sessions, the client reported notable improvements in their mood, coping skills, and overall quality of life. By utilizing the mind mapping technique as a guiding framework, the client gained invaluable insights into their inner workings and developed actionable strategies for navigating life’s challenges with greater confidence and clarity. This transformative experience underscores the power of evidence-based mental wellness strategies in facilitating personal growth and resilience.

Based on your experience and research, can you please share “5 Everyday Life Hacks For Optimal Mental Wellness?”

1. Prioritize Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is foundational for mental wellness, facilitating cognitive function, mood regulation, and stress management. By ensuring adequate rest, individuals can optimize their mental resilience and overall well-being. For example, I once worked with a client who struggled with chronic stress and anxiety. By prioritizing consistent sleep patterns and creating a calming bedtime routine, they noticed significant improvements in their ability to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook.

2. Nourish Your Body with Healthy Eating: A balanced diet rich in whole foods nourishes both the body and mind, providing essential nutrients for optimal brain function and emotional regulation. Eliminating processed foods and prioritizing nutritious options can support mental clarity and mood stability. I recall a client who struggled with mood swings and low energy levels. Through dietary adjustments focused on whole, nutrient-dense foods, they experienced enhanced cognitive function and a noticeable uplift in mood.

3. Engage in Regular Exercise: Physical activity not only benefits physical health but also plays a crucial role in promoting mental wellness. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that induce feelings of happiness and well-being. Additionally, regular exercise can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. One client I worked with found solace in daily walks and yoga practice, noticing a marked reduction in stress levels and an increase in overall happiness and vitality.

4. Cultivate Positive Social Connections: Surrounding oneself with supportive, positive individuals fosters a sense of belonging and emotional well-being. Engaging in meaningful social interactions can provide emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and promote a sense of community. I recall a client who struggled with feelings of isolation and self-doubt. By actively seeking out positive social connections and nurturing existing relationships, they experienced a profound sense of belonging and emotional fulfillment.

What role does technology play in mental wellness today, and how can individuals leverage it positively without exacerbating mental health issues?

In today’s world, technology offers incredible tools for mental wellness. From meditation apps to online support groups, it’s easier than ever to find resources and connect with others. But it’s essential to use tech mindfully. I’ve found that setting boundaries and prioritizing face-to-face interactions alongside digital connections helps me stay balanced. By using technology to support my well-being, rather than letting it consume me, I’ve been able to find greater peace and connection in my daily life.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

I would like to work with Keanu Reeves on a humanitarian project where we create a holistic program in various languages that teaches people how to heal, I would be demonstrating techniques. I would like to travel to areas where people have the least access to mental health and wellness.
