Support and use eco-friendly transportation methods like bicycle riding, EV motors to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

As we face an unprecedented environmental crisis, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more urgent. This series seeks to spotlight the innovative minds and passionate advocates who are leading the charge in environmental conservation and sustainable practices. We aim to explore the most effective strategies, breakthrough technologies, and transformative policies that are shaping a more sustainable future for our planet. As a part of this series, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Bibhhuti Bhusan Behera.

Bibhhuti Bhusan Behera is an eminent Bollywood actor, environmental activist, and Artist Ambassador to Save The Children. He actively participates in the WWF India-led Adopt A Tree project, fostering sustainability by promoting tree adoption. Bhusan occasionally advocates for wildlife conservation, cruelty free fashion, and sustainable development.

Thank you so much for joining us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’?

I am an Indian Bollywood actor, environmental activist and Artist Ambassador to Save The Children. I was born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India but now staying in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India for my professional career.

Can you share with us the most interesting story from your career? Can you tell us what lessons or ‘takeaways’ you learned from that?

Everything about the Adopt a Tree campaign for WWF India was new to me. The first day itself was tiring, yet relaxing at the same time as I felt like I was a part of something larger than myself, like I was helping build a better world.

You are a successful leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

As a successful leader, my three character traits include resilience, empathy, and adaptability. I faced setbacks in the industry, understood community needs through activism, and adapted my craft for social impact, exemplifying these qualities.

Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that might help people?

Now I am joining hands with SankalpTaru.Org to plant Plant 500+ fruit, medicinal and fodder species. I think planting more trees can fight air pollution across India’s major cities and significantly reduce carbon footprint and global warming. And people will breathe more fresh oxygen through air.

Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of our interview. What pivotal moment led you to dedicate your career to sustainability, and how has that shaped your approach to environmental challenges?

Thanks! My passion for sustainability and the Atma Nirbhar Bharat campaign launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi led me to dedicate my career to sustainability. That has influenced my strategy in addressing environmental issues, guiding me to a purpose-driven approach to challenges.

Could you describe a groundbreaking project or initiative you’ve been involved in that significantly contributed to sustainability?

I’ve been actively participating in the WWF India-led Adopt A Tree project, fostering sustainability by promoting tree adoption, a meaningful initiative aligning with environmental conservation and community engagement.

How do you navigate the balance between economic growth and environmental preservation in your sustainability strategies?

I mostly prioritize sustainable practices for that. Engaging in initiatives like the Adopt A Tree project with WWF India, I advocate for eco-friendly approaches in the entertainment industry through storytelling.

What emerging technologies or innovations do you believe hold the most promise for advancing sustainability and why?

AI-driven conservation monitoring and renewable energy solutions are some of the emerging technologies or innovations I believe hold the most promise for advancing sustainability. Why, because these innovations offer efficient tools for environmental protection, aligning with my commitment to sustainability.

Based on your research or experience, can you please share your “5 Top Strategies for a Cleaner Planet”?

1 . Engage in community-driven initiatives like plastic litter cleaning in rivers and coastal areas, education tours, tree plantation drive etc.

2 . Support and use eco-friendly transportation methods like bicycle riding, EV motors to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

3 . Promote sustainable practices in daily life.

4 . Cooperate with Government to implement renewable energy solutions in rural areas.

5 . Inform and educate youngsters about the importance of the environment and its protection through academic curriculum.

In your view, what are the key steps individuals, communities, and governments need to take to achieve a more sustainable future?

To achieve a more sustainable future, individuals need to adopt eco-friendly practices, communities should prioritize local conservation efforts, and governments need to enact and enforce policies promoting environmental responsibility.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Considering me a person of enormous influence, if I could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, that would be sapling plantation drive because saplings while growing will create a healthy atmosphere around us by giving free oxygen to the air.
