May Deldari Of Maylyn & Co On Why They Are Embracing Slow Fashion and Renewable Consumption

An Interview With Monica Sanders

Building a transparent and trustworthy supply chain is vital. Collaborating with partners who share your values and adhering to fair labor practices fosters a sense of authenticity.

As ‘slow fashion’ grows in popularity, more fashion companies are jumping on the bandwagon. Renewable consumption has been gaining popularity for a while, as people recognize its importance, and many fashion companies want to be a part of this change. In this interview series, we are talking to business leaders in the fashion industry to discuss why they are embracing slow fashion and renewable consumption. As a part of this series, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing May Deldari.

May Deldari is an innovative entrepreneur in the realm of sustainable fashion. With a meticulous blend of style and ecological awareness, May’s visionary approach is reshaping the silk and fashion industry. Through her brand, she pioneers elegant designs that embrace environmentally responsible practices, striving to forge a harmonious coexistence between fashion and the planet. By merging textile engineering principles and creative ingenuity, May is leading the charge towards a more sustainable and conscientious future for the fashion world.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you a bit more. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood “backstory”?

Growing up in a nurturing Iranian household, I was immersed in a world that celebrated Iranian culture, sustainability, and the environment. From the poetry of Hafez to Persian music, I learned the interconnectedness between humanity and nature. Tending to our family garden taught me the importance of sustainable agriculture, minimizing our ecological footprint. Inspired by my heritage, I aimed to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern eco-friendly practices in the fashion industry.

In addition to these experiences, family trips to the Caspian Sea allowed me to appreciate the beauty of nature and understand the need to preserve such ecosystems. The visits to lotus farms immersed me in the vibrant colors and intricate beauty of the lotus blooms, nurturing a deep appreciation for the natural world. These childhood memories, rooted in Iranian culture and a commitment to sustainability, continue to guide my journey as I strive to honor my heritage and raise awareness for environmental care.

Can you tell us the story about what led you to this particular career path?

I chose a career path in sustainable fashion because I believe that the choices we make as individuals and industries have a profound impact on the world around us. Witnessing the detrimental effects of the fast fashion industry and its toll on the environment, people and animals, I couldn’t ignore the urgent need for change. My passion for sustainability, coupled with my love for fashion, led me to envision a future where style and ethics seamlessly coexist. I am driven by a deep-rooted desire to contribute to a more sustainable and conscious fashion industry, one that respects the environment, saves the animals, empowers workers, and fosters a circular economy.

You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Three instrumental traits that have been key to my success are resilience, creativity, and a commitment to continuous learning. Resilience has allowed me to navigate through challenges and setbacks, fueling my determination to push forward even in the face of adversity. In the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of sustainable fashion, adaptability and resilience are essential to overcoming obstacles and finding innovative solutions.

Creativity has been a driving force in my journey, enabling me to think outside the box and find unique approaches to merge sustainability and fashion. It has empowered me to infuse my designs with a distinct aesthetic that resonates with conscious consumers. Whether it’s upcycling materials or experimenting with new sustainable practices, creativity fuels my ability to break boundaries and create positive change.

Lastly, a commitment to continuous learning has been fundamental to my growth and success. The fashion industry is constantly evolving, and staying informed about new technologies, materials, and best practices is crucial. I embrace a growth mindset, seeking out opportunities to expand my knowledge, attending workshops and conferences, and staying connected with like-minded individuals. By constantly learning and adapting, I am able to stay at the forefront of the sustainable fashion movement and make informed decisions that drive my brand forward.

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

What sets our company apart is our relentless pursuit of innovation and our revolutionary textile-engineered fabric, Persian Lotus Silk ™. We recognized the inherent cruelty and environmental impact of the traditional silk industry, where silkworms are harmed in the production process. With our advanced manufacturing technology, we have developed a game-changing substitute that not only eliminates animal exploitation but also surpasses regular silk in terms of quality and comfort.

At our core, we are driven by a mission to provide a superior and cruelty-free alternative to traditional silk. We have perfected the art of creating a fabric that captures the exquisite sheen and drape of silk without the need for animal exploitation. Through innovation and advanced manufacturing technology, we are proud to offer a substitute that exceeds the standards of regular silk in terms of softness, comfort, and overall quality. By embracing our Vegan Silk ™, individuals can make a conscious choice that is not only fashion-forward but also aligned with their values of compassion and sustainability.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

One life quote that has resonated deeply with me is, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” These words, spoken by Steve Jobs, encapsulate the essence of finding purpose and fulfillment in one’s professional endeavors. Throughout my journey, I have come to understand the immense power of passion in driving personal and professional success. When we genuinely love what we do, work becomes more than just a means to an end; it becomes a source of inspiration, dedication, and creative expression. This quote serves as a constant reminder to seek out work that aligns with my passions and values. It encourages me to explore my interests, discover my strengths, and pursue a career path that ignites a fire within me. By following this path of passion, I have experienced firsthand the transformative effects it has on my motivation, productivity, and overall happiness.

Why did you decide to create and use a sustainable business model for your fashion brand?

I decided to create and use a sustainable business model for my fashion brand because I believe that the fashion industry has a profound impact on both people and the planet. Witnessing the environmental degradation, social injustices, and unethical practices prevalent in the industry, I felt a deep responsibility to be part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem. I recognized that sustainability was not just a trend but a necessity for the future of fashion.

By adopting a sustainable business model, I aim to minimize the negative impact of my brand on the environment and promote ethical practices throughout the supply chain. I strive to source eco-friendly materials, prioritize fair trade and safe working conditions for artisans, and implement circular strategies such as upcycling and zero-waste production. It is crucial for me to create products that are not only stylish and of high quality but also align with my values of social and environmental responsibility.

What are three things we should all know about “slow fashion”?

As someone who embraces slow fashion, there are three key things that I believe everyone should know about this mindful approach to clothing. First and foremost, slow fashion encourages us to shift away from the fast-paced, disposable culture that dominates the fashion industry. It emphasizes quality over quantity, promoting the idea of investing in well-made, durable garments that can stand the test of time.

Secondly, slow fashion values ethical and sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain. It focuses on transparency, fair wages, and safe working conditions for garment workers, as well as environmentally friendly production methods and materials.

Lastly, slow fashion empowers us to express our individuality and personal style through conscious choices. It encourages us to curate a wardrobe filled with timeless pieces that reflect our values, allowing us to break free from the constant cycle of trends and find joy in clothes that truly resonate with us. By embracing slow fashion, we can make a positive impact on both the planet and ourselves, fostering a more mindful and meaningful relationship with our clothing.

Can you please explain how it can be fashionable to buy less, wait a little longer, or even repair clothing?

In a world obsessed with constant consumption and fleeting trends, slowing down and being more intentional with our purchases allows us to cultivate a unique and timeless sense of style. By buying fewer items, we can invest in high-quality pieces that are well-crafted and made to last, instantly elevating our wardrobe. Waiting a little longer for the perfect item builds anticipation and adds a sense of excitement and appreciation when we finally acquire it. Additionally, repairing our clothing not only saves money but also adds a personal touch and a story to our garments. It demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity, making our clothing truly one-of-a-kind. In a society that often equates fashion with mindless consumerism, embracing the idea of buying less, waiting, and repairing promotes a more sustainable, ethical, and ultimately fashionable approach to dressing ourselves.

Thank you for all that. Here is the main question of our interview. What are your “5 Things You Need To Lead a Successful Slow Fashion Brand”.

1 . A strong commitment to sustainability is crucial. This involves sourcing eco-friendly materials, implementing ethical production practices, and prioritizing transparency in the supply chain.
