Incredible Wellness Destinations: Lydia Eva Mpanga and Nkuringo Safaris On Why & How Traveling Can Help Us Heal

An Interview With Wanda Malhotra

Embrace Flexibility: Travel often comes with unexpected changes and challenges. Embracing flexibility can turn these moments into opportunities for growth. For example, during a heavy rainstorm, a guest at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge had to change their trekking plans. Instead of feeling disappointed, they took the opportunity to explore local crafts and interact with community members. This adaptability not only enriched their cultural experience but also taught them the value of going with the flow.

Thankfully, the world is open for travel once again. Traveling can broaden our horizons and make space for people to become more open-minded. How can travel give us the opportunity for personal growth? What are some ways that travel can help us become better human beings? As a part of our series about “How Traveling Can Help Us Become Better Human Beings”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lydia Eva Mpanga.

Lydia Eva Mpanga is the founder of safari operator, Nkuringo Safaris. The company is an on-the-ground licensed tour operator that offers unforgettable, safe, intimate, and authentic Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania wildlife experiences. Nkuringo Safaris has a long-standing presence in their regions of operation, and a deep understanding of their landscapes, cultures and wellness traditions, along with a commitment to providing exceptional wellness travel experiences that nourish the mind, body, and soul.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive into the main focus of our interview, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

“I was born into a family of all girls, with our mother as the primary provider. My childhood in Uganda was a mix of excitement and challenges, set against a backdrop of difficult economic, social, and political times. Although we had little in terms of material wealth, these experiences taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, hard work, and perseverance.

“Growing up, my sisters and I supported each other and found creative ways to overcome obstacles. These formative years shaped me into the resilient and purpose-driven business owner I am today. The lessons I learned about facing challenges head-on, being resourceful, and never losing sight of my goals have been fundamental in my journey. My mother’s example of strength and determination continues to inspire me as I lead my teams and strive to provide exceptional experiences for our guests at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.”

What or who inspired you to pursue your career? We’d love to hear the story.

“My career was profoundly inspired by Robert Briery, a seasoned travel writer and photographer who was incredibly passionate about his work. I first met Robert when I was just starting out, and his enthusiasm for adventure and storytelling was infectious. He took me under his wing as his assistant, and over time, I became his business partner.

“Robert taught me all the intricacies of organizing and managing adventure tours. His meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of creating memorable experiences were invaluable lessons. Together, we co-founded this business, driven by a shared vision of providing unique and bespoke safari experiences.

“Sadly, Robert passed away a few years ago, but his passion and dedication continue to inspire me every day. His legacy lives on in our commitment to excellence and our drive to offer personalized and unforgettable journeys to our guests. Robert’s influence has been a cornerstone of our business, and it’s his spirit that propels us to continually elevate our standards and create extraordinary adventures.”

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Was there a particular person who you feel gave you the most help or encouragement to be who you are today? Can you share a story about that?

“My mother has been the most influential person in my life, especially during my formative years. I was born at a time when the girl-child faced significant disadvantages in accessing education. Additionally, Uganda was going through tough economic, social, and political times. Despite these challenges, my mother instilled in me and my sisters the importance of looking beyond the immediate hardships and striving for excellence with whatever resources we had.

“Her resilience and determination were our guiding lights. She taught us that hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude could help us overcome any obstacle. Every morning, her lessons echo in my mind, inspiring me to lead my teams with the same determination and dedication. Her influence pushes me to serve our guests with the utmost care and to always deliver beyond expectations.

“One particular story that stands out is when my mother, despite limited means, found a way to ensure we had access to books and learning materials. This act of sacrifice and her unwavering belief in the power of education left a profound impact on me. It taught me the value of resourcefulness and the importance of investing in people, especially girls — values I carry with me as I guide my teams and serve our communities today.”

It has been said that sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share the funniest or most interesting mistake that occurred to you in the course of your career? What lesson or takeaway did you learn from that?

“One of the funniest and most interesting mistakes happened early in my career when we were just starting out with Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, which back then was just a basic camp with no facilities. We organized a gorilla trekking tour for a group of very enthusiastic wildlife enthusiasts. In my eagerness to impress them, I mistakenly scheduled the tour during the rainy season, thinking it would add to the ‘adventure.’ Little did I know that the heavy rains would turn the already challenging roads into muddy, nearly impassable trails, making the journey to Bwindi a real test of endurance.

“To add to the chaos, the logistics were a nightmare. Securing permits was harder than anticipated, and our transport from Entebbe faced numerous delays. We ended up spending more time trying to navigate the treacherous roads and dealing with stuck vehicles than actually trekking to see the gorillas. The camp, with its minimal facilities, was flooded, and we all had to huddle together under makeshift shelters.

“What did I learn? Timing is everything in the safari business. It taught me the importance of understanding seasonal changes and their impact on wildlife and logistics. Plus, it was a great lesson in managing expectations and being prepared for any situation. Despite the challenges, the group had a memorable adventure, and we shared many laughs along the way. This experience reinforced the importance of meticulous planning, clear communication, and flexibility. It also highlighted the resilience and adaptability required to run a successful safari operation in Uganda.”

Can you share your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Why does that resonate with you so much?

“One of my favorite life lesson quotes is by Nelson Mandela: ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’ This quote resonates deeply with me because it encapsulates the journey and challenges we’ve faced in building our safari company in Uganda and beyond.

“The obstacles seemed insurmountable when we started, especially for me as a woman CEO. There were countless moments when it felt like we were attempting the impossible. However, we overcame those challenges with determination, perseverance, and a passionate team.

“This quote serves as a reminder that no matter how daunting a task may appear, with the right mindset and effort, we can achieve our goals. It inspires me to push through difficulties and continue striving for excellence in providing unforgettable safari experiences for our guests.”

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now? How do you think that might help people?

“One of the most exciting projects we’re currently working on is expanding our safari business into Tanzania and building a new lodge in Kibale National Park, Uganda. This expansion is a significant step for us, as it allows us to offer our guests a broader range of experiences, from the vast plains of the Serengeti to the rich biodiversity of Kibale’s rainforests.

“This project is particularly meaningful because it goes beyond just business growth. By expanding into Tanzania and developing the new lodge, we’re creating numerous job opportunities for local communities. This not only helps reduce unemployment but also provides training and skill development, empowering locals with valuable expertise in the hospitality and tourism industry.

“Additionally, we’re committed to supporting community initiatives. In Kibale, we’re working closely with local organizations to ensure that our presence benefits the surrounding communities. This includes projects focused on education, healthcare, and conservation efforts to protect the region’s unique wildlife and natural resources.”

OK, thank you for all of that. Let’s now shift to the core focus of our interview about wellness destinations. Let’s dive deeper into these together. Based on your research or personal experience, why do you think travel can lead to better wellness? Can you share a story?

They include guided nature walks, where guests can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the forest, yoga sessions with breathtaking views of the landscape, and meditation practices by the soothing riverside. Additionally, our nutritious and locally sourced meals are crafted to nourish the body and support overall health.

“For this particular guest, the combination of physical activity, mindful practices, and the opportunity to connect with nature had a transformative effect. She left feeling rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of clarity and peace. She shared with us how the experience not only helped her manage her stress but also inspired her to incorporate wellness practices into her daily life back home.

“Traveling for wellness, especially in a setting as unique as a safari, offers a powerful way to step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, reconnect with oneself, and gain a fresh perspective. At Nkuringo Safaris, we are passionate about creating these life-changing experiences, allowing our guests to return home not only with unforgettable memories but also with a greater sense of well-being.”

The guest particularly appreciated the personalized service, mentioning how our team went above and beyond to ensure their comfort and satisfaction.

Do you think travel enhances our mindfulness, optimism, or sense of gratitude? How? Can you please explain with an example or story?

“Travel has a profound ability to enhance our mindfulness, optimism, and sense of gratitude by exposing us to new environments, cultures, and experiences. At Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, we have witnessed firsthand how our guests undergo these transformations during their stay.

“One example that stands out is a guest who visited us after a particularly challenging year. Initially, they were looking for a way to escape their routine and find some peace. Upon arrival, they were immediately struck by the serene beauty of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanoes. The sheer tranquility of the environment encouraged them to slow down, breathe deeply, and become more mindful of their surroundings.

“Participating in our guided nature walks and gorilla trekking activities allowed this guest to be fully present in the moment. The awe of witnessing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat fostered a deep sense of gratitude for the beauty and complexity of nature. Interacting with the local community and learning about their way of life further broadened their perspective, fostering a sense of optimism about the resilience and kindness of people.

“By the end of their stay, the guest expressed how the experience had not only provided much-needed relaxation but also renewed their appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and the importance of being present. They left with a more positive outlook and a profound sense of gratitude for the natural world and the connections they had made. This story illustrates how travel, particularly to places like Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, can significantly enhance mindfulness, optimism, and gratitude.”

What are your “5 Habits You Should Develop In Order Make Travel Into An Opportunity For Wellness & Personal Growth?”

“1. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness involves being fully present and engaged in the moment, which can significantly enhance your travel experience. One of our guests shared how their habit of practising mindfulness transformed their gorilla trekking adventure. By focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells of the forest, they felt a deeper connection with nature and the majestic mountain gorillas. This mindful approach allowed them to appreciate each moment, leading to a more enriching and memorable experience.

“3. Prioritize Self-care: Making time for self-care during travel is crucial for maintaining wellness. One guest, who was initially hesitant about taking time off from their busy schedule, found immense value in prioritizing self-care during their stay at our lodge. They indulged in spa treatments, enjoyed healthy meals, and participated in yoga sessions. This focus on self-care not only rejuvenated their body but also provided mental clarity and emotional balance.

“4. Engage with the Local Culture: Immersing yourself in the local culture can provide profound insights and personal growth. A guest who actively participated in our cultural tours and local community projects shared how these experiences broadened their perspective. By engaging with the local community, learning about their traditions, and contributing to their initiatives, they developed a deeper appreciation for different ways of life and felt a sense of fulfillment and connection.

“5. Reflect and Journal: Taking time to reflect on your experiences and journaling about them can enhance personal growth. One of our guests made it a habit to write daily reflections during their stay. They documented their encounters, feelings, and insights, which helped them process their experiences and gain valuable lessons. This practice of reflection and journaling not only deepened their understanding of themselves but also provided a lasting record of their journey and growth.”

Based on your experience, where do you see the future of wellness travel heading in the next 5–10 years?

“Based on my experience, the future of wellness travel in the next 5–10 years looks incredibly promising and dynamic. Travelers are increasingly seeking personalized and customized wellness experiences tailored to their individual needs and preferences, from stress reduction to mental well-being. Technology will enhance these experiences through personalized wellness apps and health-monitoring devices, while sustainable and eco-friendly practices will become paramount, with retreats focusing on organic, locally sourced food and conservation efforts.

“Wellness travel will evolve to encompass holistic and multidimensional well-being, including mindfulness, emotional healing, and cultural immersion. Remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations will gain popularity as travelers seek to escape urban life and reconnect with nature. At Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, we already embrace these trends by offering personalized, sustainable, and holistic wellness experiences in the serene environment of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, aligning perfectly with the future direction of wellness travel.”
