Wellness Mastery: Mental Health Expert Tayler Durrett On Everyday Life Hacks for Optimal Mental Wellness

An Interview with Eden Gold

Self-Care Time: Taking regular breaks to engage in activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation is essential for managing stress. This can include hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or simply practicing mindfulness and being present in the moment. Self-care looks different for everyone, so it’s important for individuals to identify what activities bring them joy and peace. One example I often recommend is creating a self-care routine, whether it’s dedicating time each evening to read a book, take a bath, or indulge in a favorite hobby. This intentional self-nurturing can significantly reduce overall stress levels and enhance well-being.

In our modern, fast-paced society, mental wellness is a crucial aspect of leading a fulfilling life. However, for many people, achieving and maintaining good mental health can be a challenging task, with obstacles such as stress, anxiety, depression, and more. That’s why it’s essential to have practical and accessible strategies for mental wellness that can help build resilience, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being. As part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tayler Durrett.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about Mental Wellness Life Hacks, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?

From a very young age, I found myself intrigued by the world of therapy, a fascination that was deeply inspired by my mother’s career as a play therapist. Her ability to touch lives positively, paired with the flexibility to maintain a perfect balance between her professional and personal life, left a lasting impression on me. The idea that one could make such a significant impact while also leading a fulfilling life was captivating. This admiration wasn’t fleeting; it blossomed into a desire that guided my career choices and ambitions through the years.

As I entered into my ungraduated education, my aspiration to follow in similar footsteps only intensified. The path seemed not just appealing but clear and undeniable. My career has been a rich in experiences, including roles in mental health leadership, substance abuse treatment, and even nutritional expertise. Through managing teams at a prominent mental health center to co-owning a substance abuse treatment facility, each role has provided me with invaluable insights and skills, shaping me into a therapist I am today. And, I must say, my dream of being able to touch lives in a positive way while maintaining balance and flexibility turned into reality. For this, I am so fortunate.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

Since starting my career in the field of mental health, I’ve encountered numerous transformative moments, but perhaps none as profound as the recent discoveries and ‘wins’ for therapy that emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic was full of uncertainty and change, demanding adaptability and resilience from us all. However, amidst the chaos, an unexpected silver lining began to shine through, particularly in how we deliver and receive therapeutic support.

Telehealth, once a secondary option for therapy, soared to the forefront of mental health care, revolutionizing access in ways I hadn’t fully anticipated. This shift wasn’t just about maintaining social distance; it was a leap towards making mental health services more accessible, acceptable, and mainstream than ever before. The flexibility and availability it offered both clients and therapists alike have been nothing short of a game-changer.

For me personally, telehealth transformed the way I operate my practice. It allowed me to reach individuals in rural communities who previously faced significant barriers to accessing care. Suddenly, geographical constraints were no longer a roadblock to support and healing. This new mode of therapy also presented a different, sometimes more comfortable, experience for clients, inviting them into a space of healing and growth from their own homes.

But perhaps the most heartening aspect of this evolution was the demonstration of human resilience and adaptability. The pandemic, for all its challenges, underscored a vital lesson: In the face of adversity, not only is growth possible, but we can also find pathways to positive, lasting change.

You are a successful individual. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Reflecting on my path to becoming a licensed professional counselor, I can’t help but relate how my love for running long distance races has shaped not just my personal journey, but also how I approach helping others tackle life’s challenges. Picture this: the pounding of my feet on the pavement, hour after hour, mile after mile. It was in those moments of pushing my limits that I learned three invaluable lessons about character — consistency, resilience, and delayed gratification — that now guide my work with clients.

Consistency is like the steady beat of a runner’s stride, essential for progress. Just as I learned to show up for my training every day, I’ve seen how small, regular steps can lead to significant breakthroughs for my clients. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness techniques or implementing self-care routines, consistent efforts pave the way for lasting change.

Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, is a skill I continually work to improve both on the pavement and in the counseling room. I’ve witnessed my clients face big challenges with courage and determination, mirroring the resilience I can relate to through countless miles of running.

Delayed gratification, a fundamental aspect of race training, is also a guiding principle in therapy. Just as runners must put in months of hard work before crossing the finish line, my clients often start on a journey of self-discovery that requires patience and perseverance. We work together, trusting in the process and celebrating each small victory along the way.

In essence, these characteristics — consistency, resilience, and delayed gratification — aren’t just about running marathons or achieving personal goals; they’re about empowering my clients to confidently tackle life’s challenges with strength and resilience.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview about mental wellness mastery. What is one often-overlooked daily habit that can significantly improve one’s mental wellness?

One often-overlooked daily habit that can make a world of difference in mental wellness is creating a morning routine designed to set the tone for a productive day ahead. Picture this: you wake up, groggy-eyed, and stumble straight to your phone, bombarded with emails, notifications, and the weight of the day’s tasks before you’ve even had a chance to brush your teeth. Sound familiar?

Instead, imagine starting your day with intentionality and mindfulness. Whether it’s making the bed and tidying your space, enjoying a leisurely cup of coffee while journaling your thoughts, or simply taking a few deep breaths to center yourself before diving into the chaos of the day — these small but impactful habits can lay the foundation for a calmer, more focused mindset and day ahead.

By prioritizing your mental well-being from the moment you wake up, you’re setting yourself up for success throughout the day. It’s like giving yourself a head start — a moment of peace and clarity amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And trust me, the difference it can make is profound.

How do you recommend individuals recalibrate their mental wellness after experiencing a significant setback or failure?

Experiencing a significant setback or failure can feel like a punch in the gut — it’s natural to be flooded with emotions like disappointment, sadness, and even fear. But here’s the thing: ignoring those feelings and soldiering on as if nothing happened is like trying to put a band-aid on a broken bone — it only prolongs the pain and sets you up for more stress down the road.

So, what’s the first step in recalibrating your mental wellness after a setback? It’s simple: give yourself permission to feel. Acknowledge those emotions swirling inside you, and remember that it’s okay to not be okay. Treat yourself with the same compassion and kindness you would offer a dear friend going through a tough time.

Once you’ve allowed yourself to sit with those feelings and give them the space they deserve, it’s time to start reframing the narrative. Think of yourself as the author of your own story, with the power to rewrite the ending. Focus on what you can control and explore your options moving forward.

Ask yourself: What lessons can I learn from this experience? How can I grow stronger from it? By shifting your perspective from dwelling on the setback to focusing on the possibilities ahead, you regain a sense of agency and empowerment.

Remember, you’re not defined by your failures — you’re defined by how you rise from them. So, take a deep breath and take that first step forward. And know that seeking help from a friend, family member, or professional is not a sign of weakness, rather a courageous step in the healing process.

In your experience, what is a common misconception about mental health that hinders people from seeking help or improving their wellness?

In my experience, one common misconception about mental health that often prevents people from seeking help or improving their wellness is the belief that therapy is only for individuals with identifiable problems or diagnosed mental health conditions. But here’s my truth: therapy isn’t just for those facing crises or struggling with clinical disorders — it’s for everyone.

Therapy offers a unique opportunity to engage with an unbiased professional who is dedicated to supporting your growth and well-being. It’s like having a trusted ally in your corner, helping you with everyday challenges and capitalizing on your strengths.

One of the most powerful aspects of therapy is its ability to help you identify and address blind spots — those patterns or beliefs that may be holding you back without you even realizing it. With the guidance of a therapist, you can uncover these hidden barriers and develop strategies to overcome them, unlocking your full potential in the process.

Moreover, therapy isn’t just about fixing problems — it’s about leveraging your strengths and learning to absolutely thrive.

Can you share a transformative moment or client story that highlights the power of a specific mental wellness strategy?

One of the most impactful stories from my career involves a client who came to me feeling completely overwhelmed by the pressures of her life. She described feeling as if she was constantly drowning, unable to catch up or succeed in any area. This sense of being perpetually ‘behind’ left her paralyzed, often choosing inaction over facing her mounting tasks. It was a cycle that seemed impossible to break.

Together, we devised a simple, yet effective strategy. We decided she would commit to two small, manageable actions each day, regardless of her motivation levels or how chaotic her schedule seemed: making her bed every morning and taking a short walk. These tasks might seem insignificant at first glance, but they were anything but.

The act of making her bed every morning became more than just a chore; it was a promise kept to herself, a signal that the day had begun on a positive note, setting the tone for what was to come. The daily walks, meanwhile, offered a much-needed break from the noise of life, a moment of solitude for reflection, and a physical activity that helped clear her mind and boost her mood.

Remarkably, these small acts of self-care began to turn the tide. They became a part of her daily routine, giving her a sense of accomplishment and control that had been missing from her life. Over time, this newfound clarity, self-esteem, and confidence blossomed into significant changes across all areas of her life.

This client’s journey is a testament to the power of starting small. It underscores how minor acts of self-care and commitment can be the start of profound, lasting change.

Based on your experience and research, can you please share “5 Everyday Life Hacks For Optimal Mental Wellness?”

1 . Movement: Engaging in physical activity is arguably the most powerful tool for managing stress. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, and reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. Movement doesn’t have to mean intense workouts at the gym; it can be as simple as going for a walk, practicing yoga, or dancing to your favorite music. For example, I often encourage my clients to incorporate short walks into their daily routines, even if it’s just a brief stroll during their lunch break. Not only does this provide a physical release of tension, but it also offers a mental break from stressors.

2 . Gratitude Practice: Shifting to a mindset of gratitude can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Taking time each day to reflect on and appreciate the positive aspects of life can shift our focus away from stressors and towards the abundance that surrounds us. One effective gratitude practice is joy-spotting, where individuals can purposefully seek out little things that bring joy in their every day, such as a nice breeze, new spring flowers in bloom, or a favorite song coming on during a commute. This simple exercise can help reframe perspectives and create a sense of contentment and peace, even in the face of challenges.

4 . Connection: Human connection is a cornerstone of mental wellness. I’ve learned that regular check-ins with friends or family members can make a world of difference in how we feel. One example of how to start doing this is by picking a close friend and agreeing to send each other a quick message every day, sharing anything from a funny meme to how you are genuinely feeling. This small act of connection has the ability to become the highlight of your day, reinforcing the idea that you’re not alone in your experiences.

5 . Task Management: Finally, effective task management can significantly reduce stress and boost your sense of accomplishment. I advocate for the ‘top three’ rule — each morning, identify the top three priorities for the day. This approach can help with a hectic, stressful schedule, allowing you to focus on what truly needs your attention without feeling overwhelmed by a never-ending to-do list. It’s a strategy I often share with clients feeling bogged down by their responsibilities. And, it frees up time for the four habits prior to this!

What role does technology play in mental wellness today, and how can individuals leverage it positively without exacerbating mental health issues?

In today’s digital age, technology plays a pivotal role in mental wellness, acting as both a gateway to a wealth of information and a tool for feeling a sense of community. I’m a firm believer that knowledge is power, and in this context, technology empowers us by providing access to mental health resources and insights we might not otherwise discover. It opens up a world where learning about various aspects of mental wellness is right at our fingertips, and importantly, it reminds us that we’re not alone in our struggles.

However, while technology can be an excellent starting point, it’s crucial to recognize its limitations. The vast information available online offers only a partial view and a generalized understanding of mental health issues. It doesn’t know YOU — the unique individual with your own experiences, emotions, and needs. Technology lacks the capability to formulate a personalized plan tailored to your specific mental wellness journey.

For instance, while an app can suggest general strategies to manage anxiety, it can’t provide the nuanced guidance a therapist can offer after getting to know your personal story. I’ve seen how a well-timed piece of advice from a professional, tailored to the individual’s specific situation, can make a significant difference compared to a generic tip online.

So, while leveraging technology for mental wellness, it’s vital to approach it as a tool for initial exploration and connection rather than the sole solution. It’s about finding a balance — using tech to inform and support your journey while recognizing the irreplaceable value of personalized, human-centered care. Ultimately, the journey is profoundly personal, and sometimes, the most meaningful progress happens in the context of human connection, beyond the screen.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

If I could start a movement that would benefit countless lives, it would be to introduce a core class in high schools dedicated entirely to mental health and stress reduction. Imagine a world where our young people are equipped not just with the academic knowledge to succeed, but also with the mental and emotional tools to thrive in every aspect of their lives.

This class would go beyond the traditional curriculum to teach students that success is not solely measured by productivity or achievements. It would underline the importance of balance, showing them that taking time for self-care is not an indulgence but a necessity. This course would offer more than just lessons; it would provide a space for growth, teaching daily habits, simple mindset adjustments, and practical strategies for navigating the complexities of life.

By introducing young minds to the concepts of emotional intelligence, resilience, and mindfulness, we’d be empowering them with skills that last a lifetime. They would learn that sometimes, the bravest and most productive thing you can do is to take a step back and care for yourself. This knowledge could fundamentally change how they approach challenges, relationships, and personal goals.

The impact of such education could be revolutionary. We’d see generations emerging with a better understanding of how to balance productivity with well-being, leading to healthier, happier, and more fulfilled lives. They would know that their value doesn’t solely rest on their output but also on their ability to maintain harmony within their lives and the lives of those around them.

This movement isn’t just about improving individual lives; it’s about transforming our society into one that values mental wellness as much as physical health, academic achievements, or professional success. It’s a call to action for us to prioritize our collective well-being, creating a ripple effect that can improve communities, workplaces, and families.
