In today’s exclusive interview, we sit down with Ashley M Lands, Co- Founder at Provincial Leisure Magazine (provincialleisure.com), as she takes us on a compelling journey from the vibrant streets of New York City to the tranquil landscapes of Italy. Thank you so much for doing this with us! It is really an honor. Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Do you feel comfortable sharing with us the story surrounding how you became disabled or became ill?

In my life’s journey, a curious chapter unfolded in 2018 with strange ‘food poisoning’ episodes, over the course of eight months, I lost count at around 57 episodes. While still traveling for work I spend days laying on the floor of airports, so overcome by the symptoms I could barely move from gate to gate. Despite consulting many doctors, the mystery persisted for months, introducing new symptoms over the next three years.

Managing work and personal life became challenging with chronic pain, migraines, and persistent fatigue. The climax came when I lost the ability to walk and ended up in a hospital. Each symptom, no matter how intense left within a few days and eventually made way for a new one.

In 2021, a transformative year for me, the prospect of relying on disability income loomed. Unexpectedly, a ray of hope emerged in the form of a suggestion. It led me to explore Chinese medicine, housed in a modest Brooklyn clinic, like a guiding beacon in my journey. Stepping into this clinic was like entering a world of contrasts, its setup defying conventional norms. However, amidst this unconventional backdrop, I encountered a charismatic figure at the front desk — a warm and welcoming presence that set the tone for what would unfold within. The clinic itself, with its unpretentious exterior, became the unlikely stage for a profound shift in my well-being.

In the care of Chinese medicine practitioners, I found not only a therapeutic approach but also a holistic understanding of my health struggles. The unconventional setting became a place of healing, a sanctuary where the convergence of ancient wisdom and contemporary challenges created a unique tapestry of support.

As I embarked on this therapeutic journey, a remarkable transformation unfolded in my quality of life. Persistent challenges that had plagued me for years started to diminish, and a renewed sense of vitality gradually emerged. The looming fear of a future without viable business prospects began to dissipate. This shift prompted me to investigate environmental causes, such as…

1. Quality of Food
2. Preservatives
3. GMO’s
4. Pesticides

Amidst a myriad of life experiences, a particular story stands out. My first extended stay in Europe, made possible with the support of friends and family, revealed a striking pattern of recovery. Within just 5 days, noticeable improvements appeared in my skin condition. By the seventh day, the persistent pain began to subside, and within a short span of ten days, various other health issues showed a marked reduction. This unexpected connection between my health and the European environment became a source of hope. It prompted reflection on the intricate relationship between geographical surroundings and well-being. As I delved into the possibilities, it led me to consider the potential impact of environmental factors such as food quality, air purity, and exposure to pollutants. Acknowledging these variables opens avenues for exploring holistic approaches to health and encourages others facing challenges to consider the multifaceted influences of their surroundings. In times of difficulty, recognizing and addressing environmental elements may unveil crucial insights and unexpected solutions.The European Union (EU) as a whole, tends to have stricter regulations on certain pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) compared to the United States. The EU has precautionary principles in place, emphasizing the need for scientific evidence of safety before allowing the use of certain substances. Specific pesticides and GMOs that are permitted in the U.S. may face restrictions or bans in Italy due to differing regulatory standards. In my particular health case.

For those curious, we can take a closer look:

1. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common sweetener used in many processed foods and beverages in the United States. It is found in a wide range of products, including sodas, candies, baked goods, cereals, and condiments. The exact number of foods containing HFCS is challenging to quantify, as it is prevalent in the food industry due to its sweetening properties, cost-effectiveness, and versatility. Reading ingredient labels is the best way to identify whether a product contains high fructose corn syrup. Food manufacturers are required to list ingredients on their packaging, allowing consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase.

2. Vegetables: The United States monitors the amount of pesticides used on both domestically grown and imported vegetables. The responsibility for regulating pesticide use on imported vegetables falls under several agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However recent studies have shown alarming data. For the sake of clarity, I have only included a study with a .gov link.

3. Meat:
In the United States, meat products are sometimes treated with preservatives to extend their shelf life and prevent spoilage. Common preservatives used in meat processing include:

  • Nitrites and Nitrates: These are commonly used in cured meats like bacon, ham, and certain sausages to prevent bacterial growth and enhance color.
  • Salt: Besides enhancing flavor, salt acts as a preservative by reducing water content in the meat and inhibiting microbial growth.
  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): Sometimes used in combination with nitrites, ascorbic acid can act as an antioxidant and preservative.
  • Citric Acid: It is used in some processed meats for flavor enhancement and as a preservative.
  • Sodium Erythorbate: Often used in conjunction with nitrites, sodium erythorbate helps preserve the color and flavor of cured meats.

It’s important for consumers to check food labels and be aware of the ingredients used in meat products, especially if they have dietary restrictions or preferences. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets regulations and monitors the use of food additives, including preservatives, in meat products to ensure safety and adherence to standards.

This is just the beginning of a long and alarming list. While every persons symptoms will vary, in my case, these factors all contribute constantly to a daily decline in health, chronic pain, skin issues, and a general ability to function.

What mental shift did you make to not let that “stop you”?

I was on a mission to find answers, and nothing was going to stand in my way. What I’ve summed up in a few sentences is the result of nearly five years of dealing with daily, intense pain — imagine months sleeping on the bathroom floor and years watching the life I’d built slowly fade away, despite my best efforts to bounce back. Things took a huge mental toll when life pushed me to leave New York and head back to my parents’ place in Texas.

My journey through health challenges has taught me a lot about sticking it out. Early on In life, dealing with chronic pain in school (along with teachers who didn’t quite get the complexity of a child with type 1 diabetes) brought unique challenges that set me apart from my peers. But hey, I figured out ways to cope that not only boosted my personal resilience but also turned out to be super handy when it came to running a business.

Patience, something I learned the hard way, becomes a guiding force. It’s the secret sauce that helps you understand that dreams might take a bit longer than you first thought. Forget the flashy overnight success stories — real success often means a journey that spans years, hitting milestones like wealth, college graduation, or homeownership. Especially with social media showcasing seemingly effortless achievements, patience becomes your go-to anchor, keeping joy alive even when things seem a bit stagnant.

And then there’s embracing a creative approach — a powerful strategy for tackling challenges and sparking innovation. Einstein nailed it when he said, “Creativity is seeing what others see and thinking what no one else has thought.” In today’s evolving work landscape, companies are realizing that nurturing creativity is a must for survival. The days of dull, rule-bound offices are fading as people look for spaces that let them be themselves and think outside the box. Whether you’re an individual or a company, embracing creativity is your secret weapon to stand out and thrive in a competitive world where being unique is the name of the game.

Can you tell our readers about the accomplishments you have been able to make despite your disability or illness?

Founded in 2014 as Stuff Oui Love, a project initiated by both myself and my mother, Provincial Leisure originated as a guide for upscale travel recommendations. It concurrently offered photojournalism, articles, video content, and Google Reviews. Over time, the brand secured international contracts with prominent names in hospitality. In 2022, the Stuff Oui Love team bifurcated the brand into two entities: Provincial Leisure, our upscale travel magazine, and Stuff Oui Love, which retained its role as the parent company, transforming into a social media agency based in New York City. Today, Stuff Oui Love continues to provide global digital marketing and photography services to fashion and hospitality brands, showcasing our dedication to excellence in travel, fashion, and hospitality realms.

What advice would you give to other people who have disabilities or limitations?

Embrace your uniqueness and focus on your strengths. Recognize that challenges can be opportunities for growth and innovation. Seek support when needed, and don’t hesitate to communicate your needs to others. Advocate for yourself and others with disabilities, fostering understanding and inclusion. Remember, your journey is valid, and there’s strength in resilience. Surround yourself with a supportive community and celebrate the victories, no matter how small. Everyone’s path is different, so be patient with yourself and strive for what brings you joy and fulfillment.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?

With profound gratitude, I reflect on the intricate tapestry woven from beautiful stories and moments that have fortified my resilience amid myriad health challenges. My deepest appreciation extends to family, clients, and friends worldwide. Yet, in sincerity, it is my mother who has transcended the ordinary, standing unwaveringly beside me during the darkest chapters of my health journey. Her unwavering commitment to sustaining our daily business operations during my periods of incapacity is a testament to the depth of her support — both as a parent and an invaluable business partner. I acknowledge with profound humility the rare fortune of such steadfast and multifaceted support.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

Can you share “5 things I wish people understood or knew about people with physical limitations” and why.

1 . Diverse Abilities: People with physical limitations exhibit a wide range of abilities. It’s crucial to recognize that limitations in one aspect don’t define the entirety of a person. Understanding this diversity promotes inclusivity and challenges stereotypes.

2 . Invisible Disabilities Exist: Not all physical limitations are visible. Conditions such as chronic pain or fatigue may not be apparent, but they significantly impact daily life. Acknowledging invisible disabilities helps foster empathy and understanding. In my personal experience, both diagnose, treatment, and other accessibility have never been available to me in the United States. Only striving to send more time outside of the US was I ever able to regain some semblance of a normal existence.

5 . Independence Matters: Many individuals with physical limitations value and strive for independence. Offering support is appreciated, but it’s equally important to respect their autonomy. Recognizing their capabilities fosters a sense of empowerment and self-worth.

Certainly! One of my favorite life lesson quotes is by Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” It beautifully encapsulates the profound impact of kindness, empathy, and the lasting impression we leave on others through our actions and interactions.
