KC Reddy Of Rubix: Five Strategies Our Company Is Using To Tackle Climate Change & Become More Sustainable
An Interview With Martita Mestey
The mission should be crystal clear. As I mentioned, Rubix was founded on the belief that blockchain is a force for good. Too many in the space lack a solid foundation and sense of purpose which can create disorganization, confusion, and a struggle to properly find a need in the marketplace.
As a part of our series about how companies are becoming more sustainable, we had the pleasure of interviewing KC Reddy.
KC Reddy’s career has been built on marrying cutting edge technology with ethics, leveraging today’s innovations to solve tomorrow’s problems — all while protecting the integrity and privacy of the end user. As an expert in both cyber security and investment, he set out to create a green, secure blockchain with boundless real-world applications and use cases. Since 2017, KC has been perfecting and refining that formula with Rubix, an L1 blockchain built on revolutionary Proof-of-Pledge protocol, a low carbon consensus mechanism that he created.
Proof-of-Pledge, KC’s brainchild and the foundation for Rubix’s green blockchain system, was born out of a desire to address both the shortcomings of existing cryptocurrencies and the most pressing issues facing humanity: primarily climate change and income inequality. Leveraging deep understandings and working knowledge of both the technology and investment sectors, KC combined the best parts of existing blockchain protocols to engineer Proof-of-Pledge, a unique protocol that allows each transaction to achieve finality without expensive and energy- intensive mining. Rather than focusing on the token alone, KC designed Rubix as a comprehensive Web3 and blockchain platform with applications in ESG tracking, publishing, transactions, and cybersecurity, to name a few.
In addition to spearheading Rubix, KC founded Ensurity Technologies, a cutting edge global cyber security platform specializing in cryptography solutions. KC is also a renowned investor in global technology, with portfolios at various funds including Barings, ABN Amro, Nevsky Capital, Charlemagne Capital & Credit Agricole.
KC graduated from Osmania University, India, with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering. He earned his MBA with a distinction in finance at the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.
Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I am proud that my career has been built on marrying cutting edge technology with ethics — while protecting the integrity and privacy of the end user. My team and I started Rubix back in 2017; we set out to create a decentralized digital platform to empower users by prioritizing data privacy and security in ways that had not been done previously, namely, through participative capitalism. We also sought to expand the total digital economy through tokenization. In the midst of this process, we identified some significant gaps in the tech world that Web3 apps could be leveraged to address these challenges. Rubix was born from the concept that blockchain can and should be used for good to address critical real world problems and societal issues.
Prior to Rubix, I founded Ensurity Technologies, a cutting edge global cyber security platform specializing in cryptography solutions. I am also an investor in global technology, with portfolios at various funds including Barings, ABN Amro, Nevsky Capital, Charlemagne Capital and Credit Agricole.
What is the mission of your company? What problems are you aiming to solve?
Rubix was founded on the idea of blockchain for good. We provide enterprises with solutions that solve real world business, environmental and societal issues. The first green blockchain in the world, Rubix is a shared, decentralized, and secure Web3 and Web5 platform designed to eliminate the limitations and setbacks of traditional blockchains. We collaborate with numerous partners who are actively developing DAOs and dApps to support a variety of use cases on Rubix — from ESG, media, real estate, construction, telecom, pharma, NFT, metaverse, deFi, gameFi, cybersecurity, cloud and more. We welcome those seeking to innovate towards a brighter future to join us.
For example, one of Rubix’s key differentiators is our unique Proof-of-Pledge protocol, which allows users to leverage blockchain technology to make our planet a more sustainable and equitable place. Proof-of-Pledge is a clean alternative to mining-intensive Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake methods deployed by other chains. This protocol allows each transaction to achieve finality without expensive mining. With zero gas fees, we are in a unique position to serve as a tool to curb climate change, rather than contribute to it.
Rubix has a number of applications in the climate space — from decentralizing climate action, to enabling businesses to meet net zero targets, to streamlining ESG reporting, to improving carbon markets and climate finance and beyond.
Can you tell our readers about the initiatives that you or your company are taking to address climate change or sustainability? Can you give an example for each?
At Rubix, we keep sustainability top of mind when making decisions. I believe one of the best use cases for blockchain can be found in emerging business trends and including ESG reporting. ESG performance has become a prominent issue for many business leaders in the last several years, many now view it as an integral part of their strategy and decision-making process. Blockchain proves to be an invaluable tool for streamlining ESG data management and disclosure processes. Everything from carbon accounting, development of carbon offset projects through smart contracts, and ensuring proper usage of voluntary carbon credits by preventing double selling of credits while making credits easily accessible for businesses can be aided by blockchain.
That being said, one exciting initiative that is underway is the Next Top Rubix Start-up Hackathon. Running through the spring, the Hackathon is a virtual way to spotlight the next wave of blockchain entrepreneurs looking to utilize Web3 in a sustainable and low-emissions way. We hope that the ideas and proposals that come out of the Hackathon will help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, namely climate change. We need leadership and contributions from innovators around the globe to meet this crisis head on. The Hackathon presents a unique opportunity to join Rubix, a community that wants to use its collective intellect to change the world and disrupt the status quo.
How would you articulate how a business can become more profitable by being more sustainable and more environmentally conscious? Can you share a story or example?
Beyond anything, sustainability makes good business sense. I believe strongly that businesses must couple a focus on sustainable practices with investments in cutting edge technologies to remain competitive in our ever-changing economic environment. Innovative strategies, more efficient technology usage, a good reputation for environmental stewardship, etc. will all save your organization money in the long run — while attracting customers and partners who share these values and embrace a similar vision for the future.
For example, Rubix’s commitment to being a green blockchain has given us the opportunity to partner with companies like FINAO, YMCA, Trst01, Krista Software, Jupiter Meta, EVVO Labs, Ninestars, The Global Network for Zero and Promantus –with the goal of using the power of Web3 to solve the world’s most critical issues.
The youth led climate strikes of September 2019 showed an impressive degree of activism and initiative by young people on behalf of climate change. This was great, and there is still plenty that needs to be done. In your opinion what are a few things parents should do to inspire the next generation to become engaged in sustainability and the environmental movement? Please give a story or an example for each.
- The research is clear. Climate anxiety is rising in younger generations. All adults must make the effort not only to understand these fears, but work with young people to get to the root cause of them. This means joining young people in their efforts to make our world more sustainable, this could range from investing in their ideas to simply listening when they speak about their fears and hopes for the future of our world. We should never speak down to younger generations but instead, recognize the role that they will play as leaders, especially when it comes to emerging technologies. Their ideas will propel us forward into a new age of greener living.
- Embrace technology that creates a better and more sustainable world. Children naturally mirror their parents, and if older generations are making a conscious effort to embrace ethical and sustainable technology, younger generations will follow suit. These kinds of technologies could include electric vehicles, smart thermostats, and other emerging trends and technologies. These technologies will play an increasingly important role in our world, and it is crucial parents know how to use them.
- Emphasize that we all have a role to play in fighting climate change. Nobody’s efforts are too small so don’t be afraid to get started. Even if a young person begins with volunteering at a community garden or switching out single use plastics for more reusable options, that is still making a difference. It will take a collective effort.
- Follow your passions. I say this a lot because I firmly believe that if we are not staying true to ourselves, we will not accomplish all that we are capable of. I also know that we need to get creative to make our earth a better place, so who knows where your passions will end up? Chances are, they can be used in a way to save our planet.
What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?
As I was setting out to build what is now Rubix, there was a lot I was thinking about and planning for. Having these 5 reminders and thoughts in the back of my head certainly would have provided some reassurance.
- Focus on your market and customers. Be ahead of the game and conduct proactive market research on customers wants and needs. Invest in in depth research so you have a complete understanding of what product is needed and the gaps that you are looking to fill.
- The blockchain space is exciting and has the potential to transform life as we know it. However, those looking to enter this space should make sure they have adequately assessed the risks and challenges of doing so. I suggest a thorough SWOT analysis.
- Building an L1 blockchain from both a business and marketing perspective is a monumental task. The potential for positive change is vast, but don’t get ahead of yourself. You and your team should be clear and aligned on the potential consequences (both positive and negative) so you can anticipate customer needs, media questions, skepticism, etc.
- The Rubix team is filled with entrepreneurs and cybersecurity experts, and I am grateful for their technical expertise. However, the logistics of running and marketing a business are quite different. Therefore, it is imperative that business leaders have the proper teams in place so they can succeed in all areas, not just one. As your business grows, you must be prepared to add new members to match the evolving needs of the organization.
- Finally, the mission should be crystal clear. As I mentioned, Rubix was founded on the belief that blockchain is a force for good. Too many in the space lack a solid foundation and sense of purpose which can create disorganization, confusion, and a struggle to properly find a need in the marketplace.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
It is impossible to name only one person. Building an L1 blockchain is a mammoth task and in the years it took to get Rubix to the place it is in today, I continue to rely on countless talented individuals for counsel and support. There are three people I would like to shout out in particular.
First, is RajKumar Kotha. RajKumar is a Director at Ensurity Technologies and is the Co-Founder of Rubix. He has supported incubation of the Rubix platform from the beginning, bringing it over from his experience in the cybersecurity industry.
Second, my dear friend and colleague, Mahesh Ramanujam. Mahesh is the CEO of Rubix and the President and CEO of the Global Network for Zero. Mahesh has played an instrumental role in introducing Rubix to the global market and solidifying our key differentiators.
Last but certainly not least is the backbone of Rubix, our technical team that is unmatched in skill and dedication. They were up for the challenge of creating a L1 blockchain with zero gas fees from the get-go, and have dedicated hours upon hours to complex technical tasks that continue to make our vision a reality.
You are a person of great influence and doing some great things for the world! If you could inspire a movement that would bring the greatest amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂
Many ideas come to mind, but I have to say I would love to inspire a movement to decentralize capital and information. I firmly believe that decentralized capitalism would create a more level playing field around the globe as well as address income inequality issues that plague far too many countries. Decentralizing data that our economic and social systems are built on is a critical step in this endeavor.
Do you have a favorite life lesson quote? Can you tell us how that was relevant to you in your own life?
When founding a company, you must begin with a solid vision of the future and a keen understanding of business and market cycles that could impact that vision. If you are taking the leap of faith required to start something from the ground up, chances are you have the skillset to back it up. So trust yourself. This leads me to my favorite life lesson, “trust your gut.” It is easier said than done, but your gut feeling is right most of the time. Stick with your passions, with what you know, and love and your intuition will guide you if you let it. Patience and persistence are still critical and don’t be fooled into cutting corners.
