Githa Duncker of AQUARI: Five Strategies Our Company Is Using To Tackle Climate Change & Become More Sustainable

An Interview With Martita Mestey

Connection and authenticity are fundamental in the creative process. We believe that by creating products that resonate with people and contribute positively, we can nurture a community of like-minded individuals, not just customers. By being loyal to our core values we hope our community will continue being loyal to us and help Aquari grow.

As part of our series about how companies are becoming more sustainable, we had the pleasure of interviewing Githa Duncker.

Githa is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Aquari — the ultimate fashion brand redefining modern femininity through its flagship swimwear line and versatile ready-to-wear pieces. Aquari blends innovative silhouettes, meticulous craftsmanship, and sustainable practices to create timeless designs that empower women in every facet of life. The brand’s signature swimwear collection features bold yet elegant styles crafted from eco-friendly materials, designed to enhance confidence and comfort from the beach to the poolside.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Since I was young, becoming a fashion designer has been my dream. Raised by a designer mother, I adored watching her create beauty in everything from flowers and fabrics to table settings and furniture. Her creativity was inspiring and surrounded me daily. What a gift to create for a living.

What is the mission of your company? What problems are you aiming to solve?

At Aquari, sustainability isn’t merely a trend — it’s a lifestyle. Our mission is to continue to ignite a shift towards conscious consumerism. We strive to create product that feels special, unique and made to be worn for years to come rather than fleeting seasonal trends destined for landfills.

Can you tell our readers about the initiatives that you or your company are taking to address climate change or sustainability? Can you give an example for each?

We meticulously source eco-friendly materials such as recycled nylon, linen, and fabrics regenerated from ocean waste. Our commitment to sustainable materials not only cuts our carbon footprint but also safeguards ecosystems.

In addition to our materials, we uphold ethical standards across our supply chain. Manufacturing proudly in the USA, we collaborate with partners who share our commitment to fair labor practices and ethical working conditions. This ensures that everyone involved in creating our products is treated with integrity and respect.

Furthermore, we actively minimize waste throughout our production process. From pioneering techniques that reduce fabric waste to using eco-friendly packaging and shipping methods, sustainability is at the forefront of our operations. We’ve also forged partnerships with organizations like Eden: People + Planet, dedicated to global landscape restoration efforts.

How would you articulate how a business can become more profitable by being more sustainable and more environmentally conscious? Can you share a story or example?

Connection and authenticity are fundamental in the creative process. We believe that by creating products that resonate with people and contribute positively, we can nurture a community of like-minded individuals, not just customers. By being loyal to our core values we hope our community will continue being loyal to us and help Aquari grow.

The youth led climate strikes of September 2019 showed an impressive degree of activism and initiative by young people on behalf of climate change. This was great, and there is still plenty that needs to be done. In your opinion what are a few things parents should do to inspire the next generation to become engaged in sustainability and the environmental movement? Please give a story or an example for each.

As a mother of young children, I understand the influence they have on shaping their environment. Children learn best through example, so it’s crucial to demonstrate responsible consumption habits. Teaching them the importance of consciously consuming rather than over consuming is just as vital as showing them how to repurpose, recycle, and reuse items.

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?

1 . Starting a new business brings both thrilling highs and daunting lows. Perseverance through tough times is crucial for progress even when you doubt yourself.

2 . Regardless of how well you plan or how optimistic you feel, staying open-minded, pivoting as needed, and embracing new ideas are essential for success.

3 . Always remain authentic to the core.

4 . Tomorrow is another day

5 . Remember to enjoy the journey rather than only focus on the destination.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

My parents are both entrepreneurs and watching them build businesses they are proud of and love has been such an inspiration to me. I continue to lean on them for motivation, inspiration and advice.

You are a person of great influence and doing some great things for the world! If you could inspire a movement that would bring the greatest amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Live consciously, consume consciously. It’s about making informed choices that reflect values of responsibility and compassion for our environment and each other.

Do you have a favorite life lesson quote? Can you tell us how that was relevant to you in your own life?

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…”Rudyard Kipling

I remind myself to remain calm as best I can and revert to deep thinking rather than deep feeling when I find myself in difficult situations.
