Education Revolution: Angie Besendorfer Martin Of AstrumU On Innovative Approaches That Are Transforming Education

An interview with Eden Gold

The power of authenticity and vulnerability: I’ve come to realize that authenticity and vulnerability are strengths, not weaknesses, in leadership and interpersonal relationships. Embracing authenticity and vulnerability allows me to connect more deeply with others, build trust and rapport, and foster genuine, meaningful relationships based on openness, honesty and empathy.

The landscape of education is undergoing a profound transformation, propelled by technological advancements, pedagogical innovations, and a deepened understanding of learning diversities. Traditional classrooms are evolving, and new modes of teaching and learning are emerging to better prepare students for the complexities of the modern world. This series will take a look at the groundbreaking work being done across the globe to redefine education. As a part of this interview series, we had the pleasure to interview Angie Besendorfer Martin.

Dr. Angie Besendorfer serves as the Chief Impact Officer at AstrumU, an innovative AI data platform company specializing in measuring and leveraging educational experiences, along with work and life skills, for enhanced career opportunities. In her role, Dr. Besendorfer shapes the company’s community impact efforts by overseeing strategic and operational aspects of the organization, including issue framing, initiative development, advocacy and evaluation. Leveraging her extensive education experience and expertise — that spans more than three decades and includes time in the classroom, as well as in K-12 administration and higher education leadership roles — she crafts and advances AstrumU’s community impact strategic framework, fostering collaborations across nonprofit, public, and private sectors to drive effective community solutions.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share the “backstory” behind what brought you to this particular career path?

As a child, I was immersed in the vibrant world of 4-H, a youth development organization that empowers young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. I was involved in 4-H camp where I vividly remember the laughter echoing through the forest, the crackle of the campfire under a starlit sky, and the friendships that blossomed amidst the chaos of arts and crafts.

One particular summer, I was selected to be a camp counselor and was eager to share my love for nature and learning with the next generation. Little did I know, that decision would shape the course of my life in ways I never imagined.

As a camp counselor, I found myself thrust into a role of responsibility unlike any I had experienced before. Guiding a group of energetic campers through activities ranging from nature hikes to team-building exercises, I realized the profound impact I could have by nurturing their curiosity and fostering a love for learning. Each day presented new challenges and opportunities, and with each passing moment, I felt my passion for helping others grow.

Despite my mother’s hopes for me to pursue a career in dietetics, my passion for education burned brightly. As a first-generation college graduate, I started my teaching journey in a rural community grappling with poverty not far from where I grew up. I witnessed firsthand the transformative impact education can have on those with limited opportunities.

This experience became the cornerstone of my purpose as I transitioned into leadership roles, dedicating more than two decades of my career to serving in underserved areas. I firmly believed that education was the key to unlocking brighter futures for my students, regardless of their circumstances.

This conviction propelled me to the role of Chancellor at WGU Missouri, where I aimed to expedite the journey out of poverty for adult learners and their families through tailored higher education programs in as little as 3 years.

Continuing my mission to empower individuals, I joined KC Scholars as Vice President, leading the charge in creating workforce development initiatives for those over 18 seeking family sustaining career paths.

Through these diverse experiences, I came to understand the challenges individuals with nontraditional backgrounds have in securing meaningful employment. This realization fueled my commitment to my current role at AstrumU, where we’re dedicated to providing support and opportunities for success in today’s ever-evolving skills economy.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

When I think back, it’s hard not to recall the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Mo., on May 22, 2011, while I was serving as assistant superintendent of Joplin Schools. Its immense size, stretching over a mile wide in some areas, left an indelible mark as the costliest single tornado in U.S. history.

In the aftermath, the Joplin School District faced the daunting task of rebuilding. But it wasn’t merely about restoring what was lost; it was about reimagining a better future. Our mission was to create quality education experiences, and we had to rise to the occasion to reframe this period of chaos as an opportunity for community growth. We couldn’t simply aim to return to the status quo. We had to resist the urge to revert to old ways and instead forge a new path forward. We embraced the concept that when you are living with things you thought you could never live without, you can question things you never questioned before.

I was tasked with leading the design process with input from community committees, which resulted in five new schools that will serve Joplin for decades to come. Reflecting on how our school district responded to the destruction, prioritized designing optimal student learning experiences and developed a strategic plan to rebuild a stronger educational infrastructure, I believe we can reimagine the possibilities for education by blending time-tested practices with newfound insights from technology and assessment strategies on a large scale nationwide.

Can you briefly share with our readers why you are an authority in the education field?

With more than 30 years of experience in progressively elevating roles in the K-12 and higher education sectors, I’m passionate about connecting students and community stakeholders to educational opportunities and implementing innovative, technology-focused learning strategies to drive economic mobility. Some of my key focuses have been digital learning and spearheading advancements in curriculum, instruction, assessment and facilities.

I hold a bachelor’s in education from Missouri Southern State University, an M.S. in Elementary Administration from Central Missouri State University, and a doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of Missouri.

Throughout my career, I’ve held diverse leadership positions, currently serving as Chief Impact Officer at AstrumU. My management experience spans roles including superintendent, director of special services, and elementary school principal. At KC Scholars, where I served as Executive Vice President, I developed a workforce program securing a $50M grant to support training for low-income individuals. I’ve also served as Chancellor and Regional Vice President for Western Governors University, overseeing significant growth initiatives at the University. I’ve been recognized with honors such as the National Milken Educator Award, the John C. Maxwell Leadership Award Top 100 and Nevada School District Teacher of the Year, among others.

Can you identify some areas of the US education system that are going really great?

There are many areas within the US education system that are performing exceptionally well. One notable aspect is the diversity and breadth of educational opportunities available across the country. From prestigious research universities to community colleges and vocational training programs, students have access to a wide range of institutions catering to their individual interests and needs.

The US education system has made significant strides in promoting career and technical education (CTE) pathways that prepare students for diverse career opportunities. Collaborations with industry partners, apprenticeship programs, and hands-on learning experiences enable students to gain practical skills and knowledge that align with the demands of various professions. This emphasis on CTE pathways ensures that students graduate with the competencies and credentials needed to succeed in both college and career pathways.

The number of online and/or hybrid learning options has also increased in recent years, providing greater flexibility to learners. Students have the freedom to access course materials and participate in learning activities at their own pace and on their own schedule. This flexibility is particularly advantageous for non-traditional students, such as working professionals, parents or individuals with other commitments, who may find it challenging to attend traditional, in-person classes.

Lastly, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in US schools. SEL focuses on equipping students with the skills and competencies to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and make responsible decisions. This emphasis on SEL is driven by the understanding that academic success is intrinsically linked to social and emotional well-being. Schools across the country are implementing SEL programs and initiatives to foster a positive school climate, enhance student engagement and support overall mental health. Through SEL, students learn essential life skills such as empathy, self-awareness, resilience, and conflict resolution, which are vital for success both inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, research has shown that SEL not only improves academic outcomes but also reduces behavioral problems, promotes positive behavior, and cultivates a supportive and inclusive school community. As SEL continues to gain traction in US schools, educators are increasingly prioritizing the holistic development of students, recognizing that nurturing their social and emotional skills is fundamental to their long-term success and well-being.

Can you identify the key areas of the US education system that should be prioritized for improvement? Can you explain why those are so critical?

First and foremost, equitable access to quality education stands as a fundamental pillar that needs prioritization. Addressing disparities in access based on socioeconomic status or background fosters fairness and enhances opportunities for all students, thereby promoting societal equity and upward mobility. This also includes ensuring robust support for students with special needs. By enhancing resources and assistance to students from PreK to university, we uphold the principle of inclusivity, ensuring that every learner can access an education tailored to their unique requirements, thus fostering a more equitable educational environment overall.

Investing in the support and continuous professional development of educators is also crucial. Quality teaching is paramount for student success, and empowered teachers are better equipped to nurture student growth and achievement. Teaching must adapt with the changing world in order to prepare students for the world of work.

Adapting curriculum to be more inclusive, diverse, and reflective of real-world challenges is imperative. This prepares students to navigate a globalized society, fosters critical thinking, and promotes empathy and cultural understanding.

Integrating technology effectively into education is essential to enhance learning experiences and equip students with the digital skills necessary for success in the modern job market. This includes addressing the equity issues that stem from limited access to broadband internet.

In addition, developing soft skills is paramount in today’s ever-evolving professional landscape. While technical expertise and academic qualifications are undoubtedly valuable, soft skills serve as the foundation for effective communication, collaboration and adaptability in the workplace. Employers increasingly prioritize candidates who possess strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities, recognizing their crucial role in driving organizational success. Soft skills enable individuals to navigate diverse work environments, build meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients, and thrive in dynamic, team-oriented settings.

As automation and artificial intelligence reshape industries, soft skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and resilience will become even more essential, distinguishing humans from machines and empowering individuals to innovate, lead and succeed in the face of uncertainty and change.

Ultimately, investing in education at all levels not only enhances employability and career advancement but also fosters personal growth, enriching individuals’ lives and contributing to a more resilient, collaborative, and empathetic society.

Please tell us all about the innovative educational approaches that you are using. What is the specific problem that you aim to solve, and how have you addressed it?

I’m deeply committed to expanding pathways to opportunity by leveraging individuals’ prior knowledge gained through their educational and professional experiences. Recognizing the wealth of expertise and skills individuals acquire throughout their academic and professional journeys, I strive to empower them to harness these assets as they navigate their career paths. Whether through mentorship programs, skills assessments, or tailored career guidance, I aim to bridge the gap between existing knowledge and new opportunities, helping individuals identify viable job prospects or educational pathways that align with their interests, strengths and aspirations. By providing resources, support and guidance, I am able to help equip individuals with the tools and confidence they need to unlock their full potential and pursue meaningful and fulfilling careers. In doing so, I believe we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their fullest capacity.

Imagine a platform that can unlock the full potential of an individual’s skills and experiences, guiding them towards exciting job opportunities or educational pathways that perfectly align with their background and aspirations. With AstrumU, one can embark on a personalized journey to discover their unique strengths and interests, utilizing advanced algorithms to analyze skills and competencies gained through previous education and work experiences. AstrumU doesn’t just stop there — it provides tailored recommendations, industry insights, and networking opportunities to help individuals navigate career paths with confidence. Whether individuals are looking to advance in their current field or explore new horizons, AstrumU empowers them to make informed decisions and seize opportunities that propels them towards success.

In what ways do you think your approach might shape the future of education? What evidence supports this?

I believe AstrumU has the potential to revolutionize the future of education by empowering individuals to take ownership of their learning and career development like never before. By leveraging technology and data-driven insights, AstrumU enables individuals to discover and maximize their unique strengths and experiences, guiding them towards opportunities that align with their passions and goals. This personalized approach not only enhances individual outcomes but also fosters a more dynamic and responsive educational ecosystem. Moreover, the success stories of individuals who have utilized AstrumU to secure meaningful employment or pursue advanced education serve as compelling evidence of the platform’s efficacy.

AstrumU will help users create an LER (learning and employment record) from verified data, which is immensely valuable for several reasons. It provides credibility and authenticity to an individual’s educational and professional achievements, helping them stand out in a competitive job market. With verified data, employers can trust the accuracy of those credentials and experiences. Through our skills taxonomy, we can build skills profiles for individuals that ensure equivalent experiences result in the same profile regardless of how they have been self-reported. This transparency builds trust between employers and candidates, facilitating more efficient and reliable hiring processes. Additionally, verified data enables individuals to track their learning and career progression over time, providing a comprehensive record of their accomplishments and skills development. This documentation not only serves as a valuable asset for career advancement but also promotes lifelong learning and continuous improvement. Ultimately, having verified data on a learner or employee record enhances credibility, visibility, and opportunities for success in today’s dynamic and competitive workforce landscape.

As more individuals embrace this proactive approach to learning and career planning, I am confident that AstrumU will continue to shape the future of education by empowering learners to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

How do you measure the impact of your innovative educational practices on students’ learning and well-being?

AstrumU’s mission is to empower individuals within the skills economy, which is a shift in workforce hiring that places emphasis on individual skills gained through education and work and life experiences rather than traditional credentials and job titles. Through the innovative tools we’ve developed, we aim to revolutionize the economic landscape by enabling individuals to unlock their full potential. These tools not only empower individuals but also enhance the capabilities of educational organizations to better serve their learners. Moreover, they enable employers to see candidates and employees for their true potential, fostering empowerment across the board. We anticipate that these tools will lead to a deeper understanding of available talent and contribute to diversifying the workforce by creating a more level playing field.

What challenges have you faced in implementing your educational innovations, and how have you overcome them?

Introducing innovative ideas within a traditional field such as education can be met with resistance and skepticism. Adherence to established practices and routines is often deeply ingrained, making it challenging to persuade others to embrace change. There are well-established norms and hierarchies, where deviation from the status quo is viewed with caution. Additionally, there may be a fear of failure or uncertainty about the potential outcomes of implementing new ideas.

Innovation is often seen as a dynamic force that propels organizations forward, but its effectiveness can vary depending on how it’s approached. Viewing innovation as a “next practice” rather than a “best practice” shifts the focus from simply following established norms to actively seeking out new, more effective ways of doing things. Simply naming it as an experiment to be better can rally support and the patience to push through the hard learning curve of innovation.

The concept of “best practices” can sometimes lead to complacency, where organizations adhere rigidly to what has worked in the past without considering alternative approaches. In contrast, embracing innovation as a “next practice” involves a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptation, always seeking out the next level of excellence.

By surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals who believe in the power of change and work to foster a culture of experimentation and learning, we can inspire others to join us in the relentless pursuit of improvement. Together, we can overcome the barriers to innovation and unleash the full potential of our partnerships, driving meaningful progress in today’s ever-evolving landscape.

Keeping in mind the “Law of Unintended Consequences” can you see any potential drawbacks of this innovation that people should think more deeply about?

One potential negative drawback of the widespread adoption of personalized educational/career pathways and skill-based recommendations is the possibility of diminishing the value of traditional full degrees in the eyes of both individuals and employers. As individuals increasingly pursue targeted skill development and certification programs tailored to specific job roles or industries, the perceived necessity of obtaining a comprehensive, four-year degree may decline. While this shift may offer greater flexibility and efficiency in accessing relevant skills for employment, it could also devalue the rigor and breadth of knowledge acquired through traditional degree programs. Moreover, if fewer individuals opt for full degrees, it may exacerbate existing social and economic disparities by limiting access to higher education opportunities and perpetuating the notion that certain professions require formal degrees for entry. Therefore, it’s crucial to strike a balance between recognizing the value of specialized skill development and preserving the integrity and accessibility of traditional higher education pathways to ensure equitable opportunities for all individuals. To counter this, we emphasize the importance of lifelong upskilling by supporting learners to understand career pathways as a continuous journey.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

“What would have happened if you were 10% bolder?” As we cruise through life there are people for whom it seems everything comes up roses. There are people who work extremely hard for every step in the right direction. There are those who get knocked down and get right back up and those who don’t. Some might say that your life is not about what happens to you, but how you respond. Your attitude and personal fortitude can absolutely make a difference in how life turns out. I’ve been told life is what you make it. As you think about your future plans, I invite you to take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself this question: “What is the boldest thing you have ever done?” Consider a moment when you thought everything may turn out to be a disaster or you might get just what you wanted. This boldness probably made your heart race and caused anxiety. Now think about how it turned out. You obviously survived or you wouldn’t be reading this. Was the result what you hoped for? Was it worth the risk? Many people literally cruise along in life letting life happen to them. They rarely stick their neck out and take a risk. They are victims of circumstance with little calculation of action to take charge of their lives. You are not one of those people. You are taking action and creating your best life by the choices you make. Knowing that you are someone who wants to craft your best life, I want you to think again about the boldest thing you have ever done. Think about and plan for the future. Goal setting and achieving are part of your recipe for success. These things have resulted in getting you to where you are today (even if you haven’t practiced this your whole life). So now I want to challenge you. With all this success you have taken risks. You have been bold. You made amazing things happen. So, ask yourself this question … “What would have happened if you were 10% bolder?” It’s the little extra that stretches you to the next level. The next time you are dreaming of what’s next, dream 10% bigger. The next time you are asking for something big ask for the extra 10%. Something as simple as 10% may be the difference between success and unimaginable achievements. You can be your own X factor. You can live the life of 10% extra by embracing the concept of 10% bolder.

My career is an example of many 10% bolder actions. My career trajectory certainly has a common theme of breaking poverty cycles, but I don’t think anyone would have set this path strategically. My career moves often happened when someone brought an opportunity to me vs me seeking those changes. The bold factor figures in because I often was unsure I was prepared for these next steps but I embraced what others saw in me and took the chance. As a result, I have had an amazing career which currently has me working for a technology company which I never would have anticipated yet still aligns with my passion for unlocking brighter futures for individuals.

We are blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US, with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them 🙂

A person I would be delighted to connect with is Sir Ken Robinson. As an esteemed educator, author and speaker, Robinson’s transformative ideas on creativity, innovation and educational reform have left an indelible mark on the field of education. His TED Talk “Do schools kill creativity?” remains one of the most-watched TED Talks of all time, sparking global conversations about the need for a more personalized, holistic approach to education that nurtures individual talents and passions. I am deeply inspired by his vision for reimagining education to better meet the needs of students in the 21st century and his advocacy for fostering creativity, curiosity and lifelong learning. Having the opportunity to engage in a private conversation with Sir Ken Robinson would be a privilege, allowing me to gain deeper insights into his groundbreaking ideas and explore practical strategies for transforming education to unlock the full potential of every learner.
