Dr Michael Reed Of The Cosmetic Gyn On 5 Things You Need To Know To Create a Highly Successful Private Practice
An Interview With Jake Frankel
Implement Regular Breaks and Self-Care Rituals: I often encourage healthcare leaders to schedule regular breaks and incorporate self-care rituals into their routine. It’s so easy to get lost amidst the daily grind, especially when you’re years into your career. This could include short walks, mindfulness exercises, or moments of relaxation. I personally prioritize brief walks during my clinic hours, which allows me to recharge and maintain focus.
As a part of our interview series with prominent medical professionals called “5 Things You Need To Know To Create a Highly Successful Private Practice” I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Michael Reed.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’ and how you ended up where you are?
My journey from being a traditional OB-GYN at a hospital to becoming a leading Cosmetic Gynecologist and opening my own private practice began in the midst of burnout. After dedicating over 20 years to practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology, delivering more than 5,000 babies, I found it increasingly challenging to face each new day with the same enthusiasm. In the evolving landscape of working in a hospital, the increasing demands of paperwork and navigating complex dynamics shifted the focus away from patient care, presenting a challenging scenario where administrative tasks and bureaucratic intricacies took precedence over the primary goal of serving and attending to patients’ needs, and I knew I couldn’t take it much longer. The passion that once fueled my dedication to medicine and kept me awake at night had turned into a draining force. It was disheartening to realize that what used to fulfill me beyond expectations was now pulling me down. As a physician, seeking help was difficult; admitting vulnerability to colleagues was met with perceptions of weakness, making it a lonely struggle.
In my quest for change, I started focusing on myself. I underwent weight loss surgery, opting for a gastric sleeve that resulted in a significant weight loss of almost 90 pounds and began walking daily. The physical transformation led to excess skin, prompting me to undergo an abdominoplasty. The empowerment and renewed sense of self after this cosmetic procedure sparked a curiosity to explore new horizons within my medical career.
During this period of self-discovery, a colleague recommended Dr. David Matlock, a gynecologist known for venturing into cosmetic surgeries. Intrigued, I delved into a teaching program led by Dr. Michael Goodman, a pioneer in female cosmetic surgery. The concept of female cosmetic surgery, addressing both functionality and self-esteem — issues I could personally relate to — resonated deeply. The prospect of correcting and enhancing aspects of patients’ lives motivated me to make a pivotal decision and leave my established practice and seek out a new path.
Despite the challenges, I made the courageous choice to leave my lucrative practice, my spacious home, and travel from Nebraska to California for a fellowship under Dr. Goodman. Downsizing my life to accommodate this significant transition, I committed myself wholeheartedly to learning more about female cosmetic surgery, embarking on a new chapter in my life, and opening my own private practice. Despite the initial burnout and uncertainties, the career pivot has proven undeniably worthwhile, opening doors to fulfilling opportunities and enabling me to make a meaningful impact beyond my initial expectations.
Along this journey, I’ve written a chapter in a prominent textbook and embarked on journeys to four of the seven continents, sharing my knowledge at medical conventions in the realm of female cosmetic surgery. Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of showcasing a groundbreaking procedure of my own design, known as ReViv. This innovative technique allows me to craft labia, particularly in cases where a previous medical professional has conducted a poorly executed labiaplasty. I can now adeptly address situations where a patient has faced unfavorable outcomes, restoring their anatomy to a semblance of its pre-surgery appearance and give women their pleasure and self-esteem back, which is incredibly fulfilling and something I can personally relate to after undergoing my own cosmetic surgery.
I’m a huge fan of mentorship throughout one’s career. None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Who has been your biggest mentor? What was the most valuable lesson you learned from them?
My biggest mentor during this transformative journey has been Dr. Michael Goodman, a trailblazer in female cosmetic surgery. Dr. Goodman became my guide as I delved into a teaching program under his leadership. Learning under his expertise, I gained insights into the intricate aspects of female cosmetic surgery, understanding how it goes beyond mere aesthetics to address crucial elements like functionality and self-esteem. Dr. Goodman’s mentorship played a pivotal role in motivating me to depart from my established practice and embark on a new path, reinforcing the significance of making a meaningful impact in the lives of patients through innovative and compassionate medical approaches.
Cosmetic gynecology stands as a relatively uncharted frontier, often unknown to many women who may be grappling with intimate health concerns. The realm of sexual wellness and health carries a certain stigma, inhibiting open conversations and awareness about available options. It is crucial to break down these barriers and illuminate the path towards solutions. Many women may not realize that there are diverse options within cosmetic gynecology that can address their specific concerns, offering not only aesthetic improvements but also significant enhancements to their overall well-being.
As a practitioner in this field, my mission is to empower women with the knowledge that there are avenues to reclaim control over their lives, fostering a renewed sense of confidence and vitality. By fostering open dialogue and dispelling misconceptions, we can pave the way for a more inclusive understanding of sexual wellness, ensuring that every woman feels supported and informed on their journey to optimal health and satisfaction.
What made you want to start your own practice? Can you tell us the story of how you started it?
The decision to establish my private practice centered around cosmetic gynecology emerged from a renewed sense of passion after burnout and a profound commitment to addressing the unmet needs of women navigating intimate health concerns. Recognizing that cosmetic gynecology represents a new and often overlooked frontier, I aimed to break the stigma surrounding sexual wellness and health, and after going through my own weight loss transformation paired with a life-changing cosmetic surgery, I knew I could offer a similar opportunity for women looking for solutions to their complex issues.
Many women remain unaware of the available options within this field, hindering their ability to seek solutions and regain control over their lives. I knew from 20+ years in this field that women were suffering in silence and I wanted to change that. By opening a private practice focused on cosmetic gynecology, I aspired to create a safe and supportive space where women could access a range of options tailored to their unique needs. My mission is to dispel misconceptions, foster open dialogue, and empower women with the knowledge that transformative solutions exist, offering both aesthetic improvements and substantial enhancements to overall well-being- both surgical and non-surgical. Through my practice, I am committed to breaking barriers and guiding women towards a path of renewed confidence, vitality, and optimal health. We even offer a comprehensive luxury concierge service tailored for women flying in from around the globe, encompassing everything from airport pick-up and drop-off to arranging top-notch hotel accommodations and more. This personalized service ensures a seamless and comfortable experience as they embark on their journey to sexual health freedom.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?
Early in my career of Cosmetic Gynecology, I met a physician from the northern part of California who had seen multiple OB-GYN’s in the area to help her with a skin skin condition of her vulva. The skin condition was a sebaceous cyst and the entire labia was riddled throughout the labia majora with the cyst. She was told by doctors over and over again that this was a benign condition- nothing to worry about and purely cosmetic- so she was left with having to deal with this unsightly issue. Upon arrival at my clinic, she basically had the attitude of “here we go again, time to suffer through this examination and hear the same thing”. But to her surprise, I said yes, we can handle this and we would do what is called a surgical labia majoraplasty. She had never heard of a surgical labia majoraplasty but I assured her that I’ve successfully completed several of these and that we can make a difference in the appearance of her vulva. She was so relieved and excited that we could help her! We performed the labia majoraplasty and to her surprise, she was smiling from ear to ear. She was instantly more confident, walking with her head up and shoulders back and even with a little bit of ‘swagger’ to her walk when she left my office that morning. Several weeks later I received a letter from this charming doctor in Northern California who said, “I’m so thankful for what you do. I used to never look at my vulva but now I look at her every day. Thank you, Dr. Reed!” When I received this letter of appreciation I knew I had made the right decision, and I continue to push forward today as a warrior for my patients every day.
Because it is a “helping profession”, some healthcare providers struggle with the idea of “monetization.” How do you address the business aspect of running a medical practice? Can you share a story or example?
To address the business aspect of running a medical practice, I prioritize transparent communication with patients about financial considerations. In my practice, we make a concerted effort to provide clear explanations of treatment costs, insurance processes, and potential out-of-pocket expenses. This commitment to transparency fosters trust and empowers patients to make informed decisions about their care. Additionally, aligning the business model with a dedication to value-based care reinforces the ethical foundation of the medical practice. By prioritizing patient outcomes and satisfaction over volume-driven metrics, we ensure that the focus remains on delivering high-quality care. To further bridge the gap between healthcare and business, we invest in patient education initiatives, such as workshops and informational materials, to demystify the complexities of medical procedures. This approach cultivates a more informed and appreciative patient community.
Managing being a provider and a business owner is a constant balancing act. How do you manage both roles?
Balancing the roles of a healthcare provider and a business owner is an intricate dance that requires meticulous attention and dedication every single day. I am extremely lucky in that my wife Abby, who is also a registered nurse, is my right hand and helps manage every aspect of my practice. Opening a private practice allowed me to create a specialized space for transformative solutions in cosmetic gynecology and to manage both roles effectively, I first have to make sure I’m the best version of myself. That means doubling down on my own self-care first; which for me is walking daily (it’s my version of meditation), maintaining a balance between patient-focused care and business tasks, and having a great relationship with my team, who I could not do what I do without. In managing both provider and business owner roles, the key lies in maintaining a steadfast commitment to patient care while simultaneously ensuring the operational efficiency of the private practice. By creating a supportive and luxurious environment for women seeking cosmetic gynecological solutions, I aim to not only address their unique needs but also foster open dialogue, dispel misconceptions, and empower them with the knowledge that transformative options exist. The delicate balance involves prioritizing patient well-being, staying abreast of advancements in the field, and providing a personalized, seamless experience that reflects the ethos of my private practice in cosmetic gynecology. The decision to pivot from an established career to embark on a new path in cosmetic gynecology was a huge risk, but was driven by the desire to break the stigma surrounding sexual wellness, offering women diverse options to address their concerns and regain control over their lives.
From completing your degree to opening a practice and becoming a business owner, your path was most likely challenging. Can you share a story about one of your greatest struggles? Can you share what you did to overcome it?
My journey from completing my degree and working in a hospital to becoming a business owner was indeed challenging, with one of the greatest struggles being the decision to leave an established and lucrative career in traditional gynecology to venture into the relatively unknown field of cosmetic gynecology. The risk of starting from scratch in a brand new state posed a significant challenge as I moved my family across the country and downsized substantially in order to go 100% in on this new venture.
Leaving behind a well-established practice at a hospital, where I had built a successful career delivering over 5,000 babies in traditional Obstetrics and Gynecology, was a daunting decision. The pivot towards cosmetic gynecology meant stepping into uncharted waters, where the demand and reception were uncertain. The biggest struggle was the fear of the unknown, the uncertainty of whether I could successfully transition into a field that was not only unfamiliar but also carried a certain level of stigma.
To overcome this challenge, I adopted a strategic and deliberate approach. First and foremost, I sought mentorship from established figures in the cosmetic gynecology field, such as Dr. Red Alinsod and Dr. Michael Goodman. Learning from their experiences and expertise provided valuable insights and guidance, helping me navigate the complexities of the new field.
Transparency played a crucial role in overcoming the challenge. I openly communicated with my family, colleagues, patients, and my support network about the decision to transition to this field. This transparency not only fostered understanding but also garnered support, creating a network of individuals who believed in the potential success of the venture- which fueled me!
Investing in continuous education and professional development was another key strategy. Attending conferences, participating in teaching programs and staying informed about the latest advancements allowed me to build the expertise needed to excel in this field.
The decision to address the business aspect of running a medical practice in cosmetic gynecology required a paradigm shift. Implementing transparent communication practices with patients about the financial considerations, aligning the business model with a commitment to value-based care, and investing in patient education initiatives became integral parts of the strategy.
Addressing the struggle involved taking calculated risks, seeking mentorship, fostering transparency, investing in education, and strategically aligning the business model with the principles of patient-centric care. Overcoming this significant challenge not only led to the successful establishment of a private practice in cosmetic gynecology but also reinforced the importance of resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to providing transformative solutions in the healthcare industry.
What are the 5 things you need to know to create a thriving practice, and why?
1. Understanding Patient Needs and Stigma: To create a thriving practice in cosmetic gynecology, it is crucial to have a deep understanding of the unique needs of patients in this field and to actively work towards breaking the stigma surrounding sexual wellness. By recognizing the unmet needs and addressing the stigma, I can tailor services and communication strategies to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. This understanding was exemplified in my decision to pivot from a traditional practice to a specialized one, driven by a commitment to providing transformative solutions in a space where patients often face challenges in seeking help.
2. Offering a Unique and Comprehensive Luxury Concierge Service: Providing a comprehensive luxury concierge service for women flying in from different parts of the world is essential. This includes handling everything from airport pick-up and drop-off to hotel accommodations, meals, after-care, and more. This personalized service not only ensures a seamless experience for patients but also sets the practice apart by offering a level of care that goes beyond medical procedures. For instance, a patient’s journey is enhanced when they can focus on their well-being without worrying about logistical details, creating a positive and stress-free environment.
3. Emphasizing Patient-Centric Care: A thriving practice necessitates a relentless commitment to patient-centric care. By prioritizing patient well-being and satisfaction, the practice has built trust and loyalty. Thus, inspiring me to focus not only on cosmetic enhancements but also on addressing functional and emotional aspects, fostering a holistic approach that resonates with patients on a deeper level and allows me to develop a personal relationship with each and every patient that walks through our doors.
4. Staying Informed and Innovative: In the rapidly evolving field of cosmetic gynecology, staying informed about the latest advancements and maintaining an innovative approach is crucial. This involves continuous learning, attending conferences, and staying connected with mentors and pioneers in the field. Participating in teaching opportunities around the world and learning about new techniques and procedures has empowered me to offer cutting-edge solutions and maintain the practice’s reputation for excellence.
5. Cultivating Open Dialogue and Education: Breaking down barriers and fostering open dialogue around sexual wellness on a mass level is integral to the success of a cosmetic gynecology practice. By educating patients, dispelling misconceptions, and creating a safe space for discussions, the practice can empower women to make informed decisions about their health. I do this through my social media channels, creating original content, speaking on podcasts, and speaking at global conferences. This commitment to open dialogue was evident in the decision to address the stigma surrounding sexual wellness, making the practice not only a provider of medical solutions but also an advocate for education and awareness in the field.
As a business owner, you spend most of your time working IN your practice, seeing patients. When and how do you shift to working ON your practice? (Marketing, upgrading systems, growing your practice, etc.) How much time do you spend on the business elements?
Balancing my roles as a healthcare provider and business owner involves a deliberate allocation of time between patient care and strategic business activities. While a substantial part of my schedule is dedicated to direct patient interactions and clinical responsibilities, I prioritize working on the practice through intentional efforts. I set aside specific intervals each week for strategic business sessions, during which I delve into marketing strategies, video content ideas, and opportunities for practice growth. Recognizing the significance of sharing knowledge and patient testimonials, I actively engage in social media to share valuable insights and highlight positive patient experiences. Additionally, I leverage platforms like podcasts and medical conferences to share my expertise, contributing to industry discussions and fostering a reputation for the practice as a leader in the field. Efficient delegation of administrative tasks allows me to focus on higher-level planning, and continuous professional development ensures the integration of innovative practices. Strategic marketing initiatives, including refining my online presence and exploring collaborations, are key components of my efforts to reach a broader audience and establish the practice as a reputable destination. Regular performance analysis and feedback contribute to ongoing improvements, creating a dynamic and patient-focused environment. Balancing patient care with these business elements ensures not only exceptional medical services but also the strategic evolution and growth of the practice in response to industry dynamics and patient expectations.
I understand that the healthcare industry has unique stresses and hazards that other industries don’t have. What specific practices would you recommend to other healthcare leaders to improve their physical or mental wellness? Can you share a story or example?
2. Promote a Supportive Work Environment: Foster a culture that values open communication and support. Establish channels for your staff and other healthcare leaders to discuss their challenges and successes regularly. Sharing experiences creates a sense of camaraderie, reducing feelings of isolation. For instance, implementing regular team check-ins has proven effective in my practice, providing a platform for open dialogue because we are all on the same team!
3. Encourage Continuing Education and Skill Development: Support healthcare practitioners and staff in pursuing ongoing education and skill development. This not only enhances professional competence but also contributes to a sense of accomplishment and personal growth within the practice. Sharing success stories of skill enhancement and the positive impact on patient care can inspire others to invest in their continuous development which leaves everyone with a bigger sense of accomplishment.
4. Facilitate Peer Mentorship Programs: Establishing peer mentorship programs allows healthcare leaders to learn from each other’s experiences. I have personally benefited from a mentorship program where seasoned leaders provided guidance on managing the dual roles of provider and business owner. Such mentorship can offer valuable insights into navigating industry challenges and give practitioners a renewed sense of passion for their craft.
5. Provide Resources for Mental Health Support: I ensure access to resources for mental health support, including counseling services and wellness programs for my team. When I was amidst burnout I knew what it felt like to not be able to turn to anyone. I don’t want anyone around me to feel like that and I’m proud to be open about that. Destigmatizing mental health discussions is crucial. I’ve seen the positive impact of introducing mental health resources in my practice, creating a safe space for practitioners and staff to seek support without fear of judgment.
One illustrative example involves the implementation of a wellness program in my practice. Recognizing the toll that the high-stress healthcare environment can take on mental and physical well-being, we introduced weekly wellness sessions. These sessions include mindfulness exercises, educational workshops on stress management, and opportunities for team bonding. The positive response from the team has been evident in improved morale, reduced stress levels, and enhanced overall well-being.
