Awkward and Proud: Shelly Gorman from Global Divine Alchemy On How Embracing Your True Self Can Be Your Social Superpower

An interview with Dr. Bharat Sangani

Practice Radical Honesty & Ownership– Embracing your true self starts with being brutally honest with yourself. This means taking a clear look at your actions, values, and intentions to ensure they alight with the person you aspire to be. It’s about letting your inner compass guide you, even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular. Take radical ownership of your behaviors, decisions, and growth. Every action that you take, every second of each day.

In a world that often pressures us to fit in, embracing quirks and authenticity can become a unique advantage. Leaning into what makes you different, even if it feels awkward, can foster genuine connections and unlock personal empowerment. In this series, we would like to explore how embracing one’s true self can transform social interactions and become a powerful tool for building meaningful relationships. As a part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Shelly Gorman.

Channeling her passion for helping to empower personal transformational journeys and her expertise in spiritual wellness advocacy, Founder and Executive Coach Shelly Gorman is on a mission to start a transmutation revolution. To help humanity courageously to show up exactly how they authentically are; to radically accept themselves and own their own “ish” through her organization Global Divine Alchemy, LLC (www.globaldivinealchemy.com). As an established and influential leadership and personal transformation coach, Shelly previously held leadership roles across North America for leading coaching companies and possesses numerous gifts from the universe including mediumship.

Thank you so much for your time! I know that you are a very busy person. Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’ and how you got started?

I have been an executive coach and leader for over 15+ years and have recently embarked on a new voyage as the Founder of a spiritual wellness revolution after living through my own personal transformation at 50. There are no words to describe just how many lessons that I have learned in my transformational healing journey over the last 18 months but you can see some of that in the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@globaldivinealchemy. The newfound freedom that the personal transformation brought, in addition to realizing that every single one of my 10k+ clients were carrying their own self-limiting boulders, created my new mission to help individuals embrace their truest authentic selves and unleash their fullest potential. And as a result, with the domino effect, help increase the collective oneness and humanity embrace unconditional love and faith.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person that you are grateful for, who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

There are so many mentors who made an impact on my journey. I learned by dissecting information from masters, both past and present, that included Rumi, Jung, Einstein, and Andrew Huberman. Each step along my journey, I was also guided to people and experiences that taught me either a lesson or provided insights that helped to guide me to the next step. I believe that everyday interactions and micro-insights are highly underrated as they really form the true foundation of evolution if you pay enough attention instead of being guided by ego.

You are a successful leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Assume A Win-Let me explain what I mean by that. When you go into any situation, you set the intent that the outcome is going to make everyone involved better, faster, and stronger. When you go into any interaction, new initiative, or situation with the mentality of a win-win, things flow seamlessly. Winning doesn’t mean that someone loses; winning means everyone ends up in a better position.

Growth Mindset- I learn every day from all walks of life. If you are open to it, even the simplest of interactions will end up being a lesson that you can apply, albeit sometimes in creative ways.

Embrace Failure- When you are scared to fail, you stay in your comfort zone. And when you stay in your comfort zone, you will never surpass what you ever thought possible. In my book, if you never fail, you haven’t tried hard enough or pushed yourself enough to understand the real boundary. Failure brings lessons that you couldn’t have learned any other way.

Ok, fantastic. Let’s now turn to the crux of our interview. Can you recall a moment when embracing your awkwardness led to a meaningful personal or professional breakthrough? What shifted for you in that experience?

The journey to uncovering and embracing all of my gifts was quite awkward as it didn’t follow the traditional path. When I began exploring my spiritual gifts, I was utterly befuddled. Although I had always been intuitive and adept at reading people, I knew very little about spirituality beyond that. As I started encountering messages and insights, I lacked any frame of reference and struggled to understand what was happening. My skepticism was quickly dismantled when I started delivering messages filled with specific details about strangers’ private lives — details I had no way of knowing. It was a humbling experience, one that left me in awe and made it impossible to deny the reality of spiritual gifts.

From there, I needed to figure out how to share my enhanced expertise and healing journey methodology with my professional network- I had to leap out of my comfort zone without any assurance that things would be okay. I was concerned because my business had historically relied on word-of-mouth referrals, and my clients were primarily senior-level executives from traditional organizations with conventional methodologies and coaching topics.

To my surprise, several C-level executives opened up about their own significant challenges, or ‘boulders,’ that they were still carrying. They shared how unburdened they felt after I created a space that allowed for reciprocal vulnerability and enabled the foundations for deep personal transformation.

This experience validated how embracing all of your true self can be your unique superpower. I realized that what I perceived as possible negative reactions, actually was a powerful tool that established deeper connections and in-depth transformation.

Many people feel pressure to ‘fit in’ socially. What advice do you have for someone struggling to be their authentic self in a world that often rewards conformity?

When faced with societal pressures to conform, the journey to authenticity can feel isolating — but it is also profoundly transformative. My advice to someone struggling to be their authentic self in a world that often rewards conformity is to first embrace the idea that their uniqueness is not a flaw but a gift. The feeling of being a “black sheep” often signifies that you’re meant to challenge the status quo, break patterns, and lead by example in ways that inspire others.

Carl Jung said, “There is no coming to consciousness without pain.” Often, those who endure the most challenges — and adversity — emerge with a deeper capacity to lead with authenticity and compassion. These experiences act as catalysts for uncovering your authentic essence, which begins with embracing the complex dualities within yourself: you can be strong and vulnerable, serious and playful, ambitious and grounded. Accepting these polarities allows you to operate from a place of authenticity.

Authenticity also often requires unlearning societal narratives that no longer serve you. Start by examining the subconscious programming and labels you’ve internalized. What stories have you been told about who you should be? Are they based on fear, stereotypes, or societal norms? Question those boulders that you are carrying and replace them with truths rooted in your authentic self.

Releasing these “boulders,” the personal and professional masks we wear, is something I am incredibly passionate about. They keep so many amazing people stuck in the abyss of stagnation. When grappling with authenticity and vulnerability, it’s crucial to remember Henry Ford’s wisdom: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.” Our inner beliefs shape our reality, especially when we assume what others are thinking or anticipate specific outcomes. When you’re authentic, you often face situations that test your values. Standing firm in who you are — even when it’s hard — builds resilience and inner strength.

Living authentically means setting boundaries and honoring your energy. As you grow into your truest self, some relationships may shift or even fall away. While this can feel painful, it’s an act of self-respect that creates space for deeper, more meaningful connections. Think of it as an efficiency tool: the quicker you show who you truly are, the sooner you attract the right people and opportunities into your life. By sharing your truest self with vulnerability, you inspire others to reciprocate. In doing so, you create a ripple effect of empowerment and transformation.

Remember, showing your truest and most vulnerable self is not a weakness; they are proof of your resilience and a light for others navigating expressing their own truest selves. Being authentic isn’t just about self-expression — it’s about contributing to a collective evolution toward love, understanding, and limitless possibilities.

How do you think embracing your quirks and imperfections can enhance connections with others, especially in professional or high-pressure settings?

Embracing your quirks and imperfections can significantly enhance connections with others, especially in professional or high-pressure settings, by fostering authenticity, trust, and deeper relationships. When you allow yourself to show up as your true self — acknowledging your flaws and idiosyncrasies — you create space for others to do the same. This genuine vulnerability can transform how people perceive you, allowing them to relate to you on a more human level.

In high-pressure environments, where the fear of judgment can be paralyzing, embracing your imperfections actually diffuses that tension. Think of it like taking off the emotional mask we often wear to fit in or appear perfect. When you allow yourself to be imperfect, you give others the permission to do the same. This creates an atmosphere where people feel more comfortable expressing themselves honestly and without fear of being judged.

In a similar way, I’ve learned that believing in yourself and owning your authenticity allows you to shine even brighter. Life is full of curveballs, and the layers that make up your self-concept — including your imperfections — are part of your strength. They don’t detract from your worth, but rather, they reflect your journey of growth. Just like each thread in a tapestry contributes to the bigger picture, your quirks and imperfections contribute to the rich fabric of who you are.

In both personal and professional spaces, embracing your uniqueness creates the foundation for stronger, more resilient relationships built on mutual trust and respect.

What role does vulnerability play in transforming awkwardness into a superpower? Can you share a time when showing vulnerability opened doors or strengthened relationships?

Vulnerability is the key to transforming awkwardness into a superpower. It allows you to embrace your imperfections, lean into your authentic self, and connect with others in meaningful ways. When you dare to be vulnerable, you show courage and openness, turning what might feel like awkwardness into a bridge for trust and growth.

For example, as a coach, I’ve had the privilege of working with many incredible individuals who hesitated to take risks or share their true selves because they felt they weren’t “enough.” One client, for instance, struggled with imposter syndrome and the fear of being judged in her career. Together, we worked on her self-belief, exploring the layers of her unique experiences, strengths, and values. She began sharing her challenges and aspirations openly with her team. This vulnerability not only strengthened her relationships but also inspired her colleagues to step up with their own ideas and contributions. Her openness transformed a previously rigid work environment into a collaborative, innovative space.

Personally, I’ve also experienced the power of vulnerability. There was a time when I was overwhelmed by self-doubt and struggled to see beyond immediate challenges. Instead of hiding behind a mask of perfection, I chose to share my journey — the highs, the lows, and the lessons. Opening up about my fears and aspirations with a trusted group helped me build deeper relationships, develop resilience, and uncover hidden strengths. It also gave me clarity about my purpose and the courage to forge a new path aligned with my truest self.

It’s about recognizing that our imperfections and uncertainties are what make us relatable and powerful. When you lean into this, you not only empower yourself but also inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of authenticity and growth

What are “5 Ways To Embrace Your True Self”?

  2. Release Perfectionism & Embrace Vulnerability– Perfectionism keeps us trapped in fear of judgment, preventing us not only from showing up as our true selves but also put up self-limiting boundaries by sheer nature of their essence. By embracing vulnerability, you not only open the door to growth, but also deeper connections and self-acceptance. The power of being vulnerable is that it multiplies genuine relationships and personal growth on all sides.
  3. Cultivate Grace For Yourself– Embracing your true self is a lifelong journey, full of fits and starts. Giving yourself the grace you would grant to others to evolve, stumble, and learn the lessons that create growth is imperative to sustaining this process.
  4. Lean Into The Mud– Exponential growth comes from embracing challenges, imperfections, and failures as opportunities for learning and lessons. Shift your perspective from fearing failure to seeing it as a stepping stone. There are so many times throughout my life when I embarked on the next career move, but I didn’t have a clear picture of what the future held. But by facing the discomfort head-on and taking one step at a time, I discovered new insights and heights that transformed my life.
  5. Protect & Elevate Your Energy– Your energy is your most valuable asset. Be intentional about what you give your attention to and how you recharge. Surround yourself with people, environments, and practices that uplift and align with your goals. For instance, regularly take time to reflect, meditate, and connect with nature to maintain a high vibrational state that attracts positivity.

Do you believe that celebrating awkwardness can inspire innovation and creativity? How has staying true to yourself influenced your approach to problem-solving or leadership?

I absolutely believe that celebrating awkwardness can inspire innovation and creativity. When you feel awkward, it is a great indication that you are venturing into the unknown, challenging societal norms, or pushing your personal boundaries — that is precisely where creativity thrives. Innovation never emerges from comfort zones; it requires discomfort, experimentation, and even failure. When we celebrate awkwardness, we give ourselves and others permission to embrace the messy process of discovery.

For me, staying true to myself and being completely authentic has profoundly influenced my approach to problem-solving and leadership. I approach challenges by asking: What aligns with my values? What feels true to me? When leading teams, I openly share my own uncertainties and invite others to do the same. This creates a culture of psychological safety, where everyone feels empowered to take risks and explore creative solutions without fear of judgment.

Believing in yourself is central to this process. It’s the anchor that keeps you grounded as you navigate the unfamiliar. By embracing my quirks and imperfections it has allowed me to connect more deeply with others, fostering deep trust and collaboration. It’s in these spaces — where authenticity and vulnerability intersect — that the most innovative and creative ideas flourish. By celebrating the awkward and staying true to ourselves, we unlock the magic of our unique perspectives and inspire others to do the same.
