Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about Mental Wellness Life Hacks, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?
Thank you for having me, I’m thrilled to be here! I’m Phil Portman, serial entrepreneur and CEO/Founder of Textdrip, and it’s a pleasure to join you in this interview series.
Growing up as one of seven children in a financially strained household, I had big dreams. I vividly remember telling myself that one day, I would be a millionaire and marry Cindy Crawford. As I entered the workforce, I found myself drawn to business and management roles. Climbing the corporate ladder seemed like the path to success, but as I advanced, I realized the toll it was taking on my family life.
Despite my professional achievements, I couldn’t shake the feeling of missing out on crucial moments with my loved ones. Seeing my own mother juggle the responsibilities of raising seven children alone left a lasting impression on me. I refused to let history repeat itself.
Determined to find a better balance, I began exploring entrepreneurship while still holding onto my corporate job. Slowly but steadily, I laid the groundwork for multiple businesses. It wasn’t easy — there were late nights and early mornings, but I was driven by the vision of being present for my family.
Over time, my efforts paid off. The businesses I built flourished, affording me the opportunity to leave behind the confines of the corporate world and fully immerse myself in entrepreneurship. More importantly, it allowed me to prioritize my family, cherishing every moment with them.
One of the highlights of this journey has been involving my children in our ventures, including the ownership of a horse farm right across the street from our home. Being able to share these experiences with them has brought me immeasurable joy and fulfillment.
Today, I live a life that aligns with my values, surrounded by loved ones and pursuing passions that bring me happiness. While the road wasn’t always easy, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I eagerly anticipate the future, knowing that it holds even more opportunities for growth and shared experiences with my family.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
The story of our journey with the horse farm is truly a testament to the intricate connections and unexpected blessings that life can bring. It all began with my wife’s deep-rooted passion for horses, nurtured over years of riding at the farm. When the farm encountered challenging times and faced the risk of closure, she stepped in, alongside a few dedicated friends, to volunteer tirelessly and keep the operations afloat.
Little did we know that this act of dedication would set in motion a series of events that would profoundly impact not only our lives but the lives of those around us. As fate would have it, the opportunity to purchase the farm suddenly presented itself, directly across the street from our home. It felt like the universe aligning in a perfect symphony of timing and opportunity.
What followed was a cascade of blessings. My recently retired father-in-law, a seasoned diesel mechanic with a lifelong love for horses and farming, found himself happily immersed in the day-to-day tasks of maintaining the farm. For him, it was more than just a job; it was the realization of a long-held dream.
But the magic didn’t stop there. Our decision to take on the farm sparked a ripple effect that touched the lives of our neighbors, friends, and even strangers in ways we couldn’t have imagined. The farm became a hub of community activity, drawing in enthusiasts and volunteers from all walks of life.
Through this journey, we discovered the profound impact of following our hearts and embracing opportunities with open arms. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary moments in life unfold when we least expect them, weaving together the threads of our dreams with the shared aspirations of those around us.
Our horse farm stands not only as a symbol of our own passions and dreams but as a beacon of hope and possibility for everyone who has been touched by its story. In the tapestry of life, it’s moments like these that remind us of the beauty of serendipity and the power of community.
You are a successful individual. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
In my forthcoming book, “The Three Keys to Success,” I delve deeply into the foundational principles that have guided my journey and those of countless others toward achievement. Let’s explore each of these keys in detail.
Firstly, I advocate for the power of visible, written goals. For me, this takes the form of a tangible vision board, often represented by a whiteboard adorned with my aspirations. This practice not only solidifies my objectives but also ensures they remain visible to both myself and others, fostering accountability and clarity. Through years of personal experimentation and observation, I’ve found that the act of committing goals to writing and regularly visualizing them is a potent catalyst for their realization. It’s almost as if by declaring our intentions to the universe, we invite opportunities and synchronicities to manifest in alignment with our desires.
The second key revolves around the cultivation of healthy habits while simultaneously uprooting detrimental ones. I stress the importance of incorporating daily rituals, such as reading and physical exercise, into our routines to fortify our mental and physical well-being. By consistently engaging in these practices, we lay the groundwork for sustained growth and productivity. Equally crucial is the process of identifying and eliminating counterproductive habits, such as mindless phone scrolling or negative thought patterns. Through intentional habit formation and cessation, we can optimize our personal and professional lives for success.
Lastly, I introduce the concept of “arrogant confidence” as a potent mindset for achievement. This term encapsulates a profound self-assurance that transcends self-doubt or imposter syndrome. Drawing from psychological theories like the Dunning-Kruger effect, I emphasize the importance of cultivating unwavering belief in oneself, even in the face of uncertainty or adversity. By adopting an attitude of “arrogant confidence,” individuals can tap into their full potential and pursue audacious goals with unparalleled conviction and determination.
Together, these three keys — visible written goals, healthy habit formation, and arrogant confidence — form a comprehensive framework for success. Through my own experiences and extensive research, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of embracing these principles. By integrating them into our lives, we can unlock our inherent potential and embark on a path of unprecedented achievement and fulfillment.
Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview about mental wellness mastery. What is one often-overlooked daily habit that can significantly improve one’s mental wellness?
I’ve found that daily meditation, which I like to call “daily silence,” has been instrumental in maintaining balance and clarity in my life. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by busyness and feel uneasy when not actively doing something. However, taking a few moments each day to clear my mind and let go of any objectives or expectations has been incredibly beneficial.
Initially, I approached meditation with skepticism, expecting immediate results or gratification. When those didn’t materialize, I questioned its value. However, through consistent practice and letting go of my expectations, I experienced a breakthrough around the 20 to 30-day mark. I realized that the true purpose of meditation isn’t about achieving specific outcomes but rather about being present in the moment and embracing stillness.
As someone deeply entrenched in the world of entrepreneurship, where results are often prioritized above all else, this shift in mindset was profound. By releasing my need for immediate results and simply committing to the practice, I began to reap its rewards. Meditation has since become a cornerstone of my daily routine, providing me with clarity and peace amidst the demands of running multiple companies.
In moments of stress or decision-making, meditation serves as a grounding force, allowing me to approach challenges with greater clarity and perspective. It’s a practice that I’ve come to cherish and one that has undoubtedly enhanced my overall well-being and effectiveness as a CEO.
How do you recommend individuals recalibrate their mental wellness after experiencing a significant setback or failure?
In moments of setback or failure, I’ve come to realize the importance of adopting a nuanced approach that goes beyond mere acceptance. Instead, I view these experiences as invaluable opportunities for introspection, analysis, and growth. By peeling back the layers and examining the intricacies of what went wrong, I’m able to uncover valuable insights that inform my future actions and decisions.
Take, for example, my journey with meditation. Initially, I approached it with high expectations, hoping for immediate clarity and profound revelations. However, when these anticipated outcomes failed to materialize, I was initially discouraged. It wasn’t until I relinquished my fixation on instant gratification and committed to the practice with a more open mindset that I began to truly appreciate its benefits. Through consistent daily meditation, I gradually cultivated a deeper understanding of its purpose and found solace in the stillness it offered.
This approach extends beyond personal endeavors and permeates into my professional life as well. When confronted with challenges in business, whether it’s a failed strategy or a setback in productivity, I resist the temptation to simply chalk it up to bad luck or circumstance. Instead, I dig deeper, scrutinizing every aspect of the situation to uncover the underlying causes. Was it a lack of foresight, inadequate planning, or perhaps a flaw in execution? By dissecting the issue from multiple angles, I’m better equipped to devise effective solutions and mitigate similar pitfalls in the future.
Moreover, I’ve learned to recognize the interconnectedness of personal and professional development. For instance, my realization about work-related anxiety wasn’t just a revelation about my mental health — it also shed light on how it was impacting my effectiveness as a leader and entrepreneur. By addressing the root causes of this anxiety, rooted in childhood experiences and learned behaviors, I not only improved my well-being but also unlocked new levels of productivity and innovation within my business ventures.
Ultimately, navigating setbacks requires a multifaceted approach — one that combines resilience, self-reflection, and a willingness to adapt. By embracing failure as a catalyst for growth and viewing challenges through a lens of curiosity rather than defeat, I’ve been able to transform setbacks into stepping stones towards success, both personally and professionally.
In your experience, what is a common misconception about mental health that hinders people from seeking help or improving their wellness?
Certainly. There’s a pervasive misconception surrounding mental health that often leads individuals to avoid addressing it until problems arise. This stigma suggests that seeking help or prioritizing mental well-being is a sign of weakness or inadequacy. Similarly, there’s a parallel reluctance in addressing physical health concerns until they become unavoidable.
In my view, there’s a crucial need to shift this narrative towards proactive mental health practices. Just as we undergo regular check-ups and screenings for physical health, we should approach mental well-being with the same diligence and attention. For instance, I recently opted for a full-body MRI, not because I had any specific concerns, but as a preventive measure to ensure holistic health.
Moreover, I advocate for open dialogue about mental health within professional and personal spheres. By normalizing discussions around mental well-being, we can dismantle the stigma associated with seeking help or support. Leaders, in particular, have a significant role to play in this regard. By openly sharing their own experiences with mental health and the practices they employ, they can create a culture of support and understanding within their organizations.
Ultimately, prioritizing mental health isn’t just about individual well-being — it’s about fostering healthier, more resilient communities. Whether it’s being a better parent, partner, colleague, or friend, taking proactive steps to care for our mental health enables us to show up more fully in every aspect of our lives.
Can you share a transformative moment or client story that highlights the power of a specific mental wellness strategy?
Absolutely. I had an experience with a former employee that underscores the importance of prioritizing mental health. While I won’t disclose any names, I have permission to share this story because I believe it’s crucial to destigmatize discussions around mental well-being.
This employee had been experiencing challenges at work events, prompting me to have a candid conversation with them about seeking mental health support. I encouraged them to engage in counseling regularly, which they thankfully embraced. Through these sessions, they gained valuable insights into themselves, their relationships, and past experiences.
Eventually, this employee left the company, but they continued with their counseling sessions. Tragically, shortly after leaving, their father passed away — a devastating loss for them. However, despite the immense grief, this individual expressed gratitude for having prioritized their mental health. They shared with me that without the support they had received, they would have struggled to cope with the loss.
This serves as a powerful reminder that investing in mental health isn’t just about managing day-to-day challenges — it’s about building resilience for when life’s inevitable hardships strike. By proactively addressing mental well-being, we equip ourselves with the tools to navigate difficult times more effectively and emerge stronger on the other side.
Based on your experience and research, can you please share “5 Everyday Life Hacks For Optimal Mental Wellness?”
1 . Getting outside daily: Make time to immerse yourself in nature daily, whether it’s a leisurely stroll in the park, a hike in the woods, or simply basking in the sunlight in your backyard. Connecting with nature can alleviate stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. For example, taking a break from a hectic day to walk along a serene creek, feeling the breeze, and soaking in the natural surroundings can instantly uplift your spirits and provide a mental reset.
2 . Prioritize Sleep: Establish a consistent sleep schedule and aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep is essential for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall health. During sleep, the brain clears out toxins and consolidates memories, contributing to mental clarity and emotional stability. For instance, ensuring adequate sleep helped me navigate challenges with a clear mind and improved resilience.
3 . Practice Gratitude: Dedicate time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for, whether it’s through journaling, meditation, or verbal affirmations. Focusing on gratitude cultivates a positive mindset, reduces stress, and fosters resilience in the face of adversity. By acknowledging and appreciating the blessings in your life, you can shift your perspective and find joy in the present moment. Personally, journaling about moments of gratitude has helped me maintain a positive outlook and navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience.
4 . Stay Physically Active: Incorporate regular exercise into your routine to promote physical and mental well-being. Whether it’s a workout at the gym, a yoga session, or a brisk walk, physical activity releases endorphins, reduces stress hormones, and improves mood. Find activities you enjoy and make them a consistent part of your schedule. Engaging in physical exercise not only boosts energy levels but also enhances cognitive function and emotional resilience. For instance, starting my day with a morning run allows me to clear my mind, boost my mood, and set a positive tone for the day ahead.
5 . Eating nutritious foods: Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Proper nutrition provides essential nutrients for brain health, mood regulation, and overall vitality. Avoid excessive consumption of processed foods, sugary snacks, and caffeine, which can negatively impact mood and energy levels. By nourishing your body with nutrient-dense foods, you can support mental clarity, emotional stability, and long-term well-being. For example, prioritizing nutritious meals and snacks has helped me maintain sustained energy levels and mental focus throughout the day.
What role does technology play in mental wellness today, and how can individuals leverage it positively without exacerbating mental health issues?
As a tech entrepreneur deeply immersed in the digital realm, I’ve always marveled at the vast array of benefits technology brings to our lives. From facilitating seamless global communication to empowering remote work and enabling creativity on-the-go, the possibilities seem endless.
Yet, amidst this boundless potential, I’m acutely aware of the pitfalls of unchecked technology usage. Just as with any tool, an overreliance on technology can lead to its misuse, fostering distractions, and detracting from our productivity and well-being.
For me, striking a delicate balance is paramount. While I wholeheartedly embrace technology as a catalyst for innovation and efficiency, I’m equally committed to maintaining control over its influence. Rather than allowing technology to dictate my actions, I approach it with a deliberate mindset, leveraging its capabilities to serve specific purposes in my life and work.
Whether it’s utilizing digital platforms to connect with a global network, streamline business operations, or document insights and reflections, I view technology as a powerful ally when wielded with intentionality and mindfulness. By harnessing its potential while remaining vigilant against its potential drawbacks, I strive to harness the transformative power of technology while safeguarding my well-being and productivity.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂
The movement I’m deeply passionate about revolves around fostering genuine empathy and understanding among people, particularly in a world where digital platforms often exacerbate divisions. It’s imperative that we recognize and appreciate the inherent humanity in each individual, despite our diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
In our increasingly interconnected world, it’s all too easy to dismiss those who hold differing beliefs or values. However, I firmly believe that taking the time to listen and understand someone else’s viewpoint can lead to profound insights and connections. Whether it’s engaging in meaningful conversations or simply empathizing with others’ experiences, these actions can bridge divides and cultivate a more compassionate society.
Having experienced diverse cultures and communities through my travels, I’ve come to realize that while our outward differences may be pronounced, our fundamental aspirations and struggles are remarkably similar. We’re all navigating the complexities of life, striving to make meaningful decisions, and nurturing our relationships to the best of our abilities.
At its core, the essence of this movement lies in embracing our shared humanity — the recognition that beneath our external differences, we are united by our common experiences and aspirations. By fostering empathy, compassion, and open-mindedness, we can build bridges across divides and forge deeper connections with one another. Let’s celebrate the richness of our diverse world while acknowledging the universal bonds that unite us all.
